Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced a decision to call a General Election for Saturday, February 8. It will be the first time an election has been held in Ireland on a Saturday since 1918. The Taoiseach defended his demand for a rushed election by saying he wanted a new government in place for a crucial European Council Summit on Brexit on March 26.


Political correspondents are of the opinion housing and health will be the main issues discussed, with Brexit being pushed to the back.
