A hospital in Northern Ireland is running a coronavirus drive-through testing and assessment service.

It is the only one in operation at the moment as healthcare trusts are making individual decisions on how they facilitate testing.

Antrim Area Hospital set up the system while it was waiting for the arrival of a Coronavirus Testing Pod which will now operate in conjunction with the drive-through.

This morning staff carried out a mock-up demonstration on how the drive-through works.

It has been set up for people who feel they have been to an affected area, have symptoms and been in contact with someone from an affected area and have phoned their GP.

The GP, on the basis of advice from the Public Health Agency, will decide if the person requires testing or not.

The doctor will then contact the hospital to arrange a slot to come in for testing.

Testing is carried out between 9am and 10am and only people with a prior appointment from their GP will be seen.

If the patient is well enough they can drive themselves to the Emergency Department where the drive-through is located and well signposted.

Once the patient arrives for testing a dedicated team will meet them.

Seamus O'Reilly, Medical Director of the Northern Trust in Northern Ireland, said the team will then assess the patient.

"They will test them and if they are well, they will go home to self isolate.

"If they are unwell or require further assessment they will either be brought into the testing pod or may have to be brought into the Emergency Department," he said.

"There are plans well developed for that."

The swab is then sent to the regional virology laboratory in Belfast.

Mr O'Reilly said that if the test is positive, there's a process where they link in by teleconference with infectious diseases units in the UK and then decide the appropriate course of action for that patient.

Just one person so far has tested positive for the coronavirus in Northern Ireland.

Around 150 people have been tested in Northern Ireland to date and one third of these tests have been carried out at Antrim Area Hospital.

New figures will be released again tomorrow as the NI Public Health Agency is providing bi-weekly updates.
