The Cabinet has agreed to amend the Retirement Bill that will in the future allow almost all public sector workers stay in their jobs until the age of 70.

The change will enable teachers to remain working until the end of an academic year even if they reach the age of 70 before then.

The current retirement age for public sector workers is 65 but it is 60 years for members of the gardaí.

As part of today's changes, Garda Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners will be able to stay in their jobs past the age of 60 in order to serve out their five-year terms.
