Workers' Memorial Day

ICTU president and Fórsa general secretary Kevin Callinan joined representatives of the Government, the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and employers’ bodies’ this morning to mark ‘workers’ memorial day’. Kevin joined HSA chief Sharon McGuinness and Minister Damien English to lay a wreath on behalf of the state to remembers workers we've lost.

 

Workers in Cork are set to join the Community service protest in Dublin on Tuesday the 3rd of May.  Forsa members in the community and voluntary sector will join SIPTU and INMO members in a national day of protest in response to what the union describes as the "neglect and underfunding" of community sector services.

 

Russia has cut gas supplies to both Poland and Bulgaria which has left the EU panicking to find alternative energy supplies. Gazprom decided to stop supplies to Poland and Bulgaria, after the eastern countries refused to pay for deliveries in roubles. This has prompted fears in the EU of further cut-offs across the bloc. 

 

A specialist team has been ordered into University Hospital Limerick by the Health Minister to try to tackle its record high trolley figures. The move comes after the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) revealed there were 126 patients waiting on trolleys at the hospital last Thursday, a record number since the union began tracking the figures in 2006.

 

The Government survived a vote in the Dáil on turf selling after potential rebels were persuaded to remain on board. TDs were voting on a Sinn Féin motion calling on the Dáil to scrap plans to restrict the sale of turf, to cancel the carbon tax increase on 1 May and to temporarily remove excise duty on home heating oil.

 

Staff at the National Gallery of Ireland have been told to "think hard" about raising issues relating to the Gallery's activities. Director of the gallery, Sean Rainbird, was responding to criticism over entering into contract with Aramark who will run their cafe. Many gallery staff wrote to its board warning of potential reputational damage given Aramark’s links to the direct provision system in Ireland.
