The Arts Council has said it will vigorously seek the payment of money owed to artists following the closure of Filmbase in Temple Bar.

Filmbase, which offered training, information and advice to emerging film makers announced earlier today it was going into voluntary liquidation.

The not-for-profit organisation has been in business for 32 years.

In a statement posted online, Filmbase said it has been fighting for years against difficult financial circumstances and that debts have now reached a point at which it is unrealistic to continue operations.

In a statement, the Arts Council said it became aware of financial difficulties at the company earlier this month and appointed independent auditors.

The voluntary liquidation was later announced.

The Arts Council said Filmbase was awarded €250,000 in annual funding last year, for its work as a resource organisation offering training, information and advice.

It said the company also received €170,000 for the 2017 Reel Art scheme which awards artists' funds to make a documentary film, and it said it is concerned that money owed to artists under that scheme has not been paid.
