Producing 40% of our heat through renewable sources by 2030 will create an estimated 23,000 jobs and save €1bn annually on importing fuel, according to a new report by Renewable Energy Ireland (REI), while the Connacht Tribune reports on anger at TG4 over staff cuts at the Irish language broadcaster.

 

Meanwhile, with local elections, a Hartlepool by-election and elections for the Welsh and Scottish assemblies taking place over the way today, gunboats have been deployed to Jersey in response to a French fishing boat blockade protesting post-Brexit rules on fishing rights. By jingo, nobody's talking about expensive wallpaper any more are they?

 

In Covid news, it's reported that spectators are set to return to sporting events on a trial basis in July, alongside groups of up to six being permitted for indoor dining during the same month 

 

Elsewhere, a political row is expected over UK Government plans for an amnesty from prosecutions for British army veterans, and possibly for members of the IRA too, while autism campaigner Adam Harris has called on the National Council for Special Education to carry out a longitudinal study of at least five years to analyse the impact of Covid school closures.
