I am mailing to remind you that the launch of the More Power To You campaign, which calls for stronger local government and better local services, takes place at 10am tomorrow (Wednesday 27th March) in the Georgian Suite of Buswells Hotel, 23-27 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2.
This initiative from Fórsa, Siptu and Connect, which together represent over 30,000 local council workers, will seek political party and council candidates’ support for a range of measures to strengthen local democracy, improve local services, and accelerate sustainable local employment and economic development.
Tomorrow’s launch will see the publication of Democracy Works If You Let It, a report on the future of local government prepared by Dr Mary Murphy of Maynooth University. This report outlines how Irish local councils have fewer powers and less autonomy than municipalities in 39 European countries, and makes recommendations to improve our record – including in the areas of housing, waste collection, water services and sustainable energy.
Mary Murphy will introduce her report and the launch will also hear from:
Rosa Pavanelli, general secretary of the international trade union federation Public Services International
Peter Nolan, Fórsa national secretary (local government and local services)
