The nurses strike remains on front pages this morning with members of the PNA also announcing industrial action. Members of the Psychiatric Nurses Association will strike in February in their dispute over pay and staff shortages. The Association's 6000 members will refuse to work overtime on January 31, or on February 5, 6 and 7. Industrial action will be escalated to full strikes on February 12, 13, and 14. The union says recruitment and retention of nurses within the healthcare system needs to be addressed. It's calling for "realistic proposals from Government as a matter of extreme urgency".

Britain's Andy Murray says he plans to retire after this year's Wimbledon but fears next week's Australian Open could be the final tournament of his career.The three-time Grand Slam winner, who is struggling to recover from hip surgery, made the announcement at a news conference in Melbourne on this morning.

RTE reports that Intel is to begin preparatory work at its base in Leixlip this month in what is widely seen as a prelude to a significant expansion in capacity there. Although the company has made no formal announcement about its plans, it is widely expected in official circles that it will move to increase manufacturing capacity at the Leixlip plant, with thousands of construction jobs created initially and hundreds of technician roles once the new facility is built.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Michael Creed will today launch an initiative to encourage Irish trawlers to remove and reduce plastic waste from the seas around the country. The Clean Oceans Initiative is the first such co-ordinated scheme and aims to enlist the support of all commercial sea fishermen here by the end of the year.
