An Ideal for Living
by Niall Shanahan

Elsewhere in the news today, it's reported that the HSE wants to retain most of the capacity it currently has in private hospitals, while a new report by two UCC academics finds that greater Dublin will be the region least affected by the economic crisis arising from the pandemic due to better remote working potential for people living there.

As we headed into the weekend on Friday a number of our colleagues had just emerged from a meeting with Aer Lingus, where the company outlined its intention to unilaterally impose layoffs and reductions to staff hours and pay after current pay arrangements (supported by the State's wage subsidy scheme) expire on 21st June. Fórsa issued this statement, which was picked up by RTE, The Irish Times and Newstalk supplied this story to regional radio and web outlets. I spoke to Katie Hannon on RTE Radio One's Drivetime on Friday evening (available here from 1:56:14)

The Business Post continues to fret about public sector pay. Having managed the front page splash last week, this week the Sturm und Drang is outsourced to (*drumroll*...*cymbal splash*) management consultant Eddie Molloy! Cue requests from radio programmes this week for a face-off between Eddie and a 'union boss'. I've watched this season before, the writers are just phoning it in.

Interestingly, on the facing page, former RTE journalist Cathal MacCoille was thinking aloud about a universal basic income and a four day week. Interesting piece, though he fails to make the ideological distinctions that exist within the UBI argument. Citing Silicon Valley tycoons on this idea, he should have noted that the same billionaires see this as a route to eliminating public services and welfare protections.

Your Zen this morning is a little bit of a departure from the usual. The 100 Archive is "a living archive which maps the past, present and future of Irish graphic design." Last weekend David Joyce, director at the Language agency, with whom we have worked on a number of projects in recent years, published an article on the archive about the four-day week, alongside published responses by designer Noelle Cooper and yours truly.

Have a good week. And as Mary Schmich once advised, wear sunscreen.
