This footage of Prof Luke O’Neill on a Zoom call with a class of schoolchildren from a few days ago is quite something. Frankly, he sounds manic. Instilling fear in the the kids that masks may never go away; that they might have to wear non-removable bracelets proving they’ve been vaccinated; that they won’t go to their debs without a vaccine. This is psychological abuse of children, no other way to say it. Not to mention, that it’s already bad enough that they’re being forced to wear masks in the classroom.

    https://twitter.com/FatEmperor/status/1331222517781065730

“We may wear masks every winter like you see in China”

“Keep doing what you’re doing (lockdowns, masks, social distancing) plus vaccinations certainly for the next six months”

“You might have a passport ID saying ‘I’ve been vaccinated’ ”

“You might have a wristband that you can’t get off” (then makes a joke about civil liberties)

“I bet you’ll take a vaccine to get to you debs” (chuckles)

      1. dav

Can’t have scientists speaking to children – we need to let them find information from antivax facebook posts and chemtrail thinking…

      2. alickdouglas

Having been subjected to the dubious honor of attending O’Neills lectures many moons ago, I’m with f_ on this one (most boring lectures ever).

    1. Cian

Cummins up to his usual tricks i see. He is taking snippets of video, totally out of context and adding irrelevant “data” to them.

O’Neill: “We may wear masks ever winter, not in schools, in shops, like you see n China”
Cummins: “how did we become China in a few months?”

I asked before if Ivor is Ignorant or wilfully deceptive? I’m leaning towards wilfully deceptive.

      1. Brother Barnabas

        blatantly wilfully deceptive

and blatantly focused above all else on self promotion

he’ll be flogging an ‘open your eyes to my truth’ self-help course next

        1. Micko

“ blatantly focused above all else on self promotion”

I think we can all agree that almost every single voice we hear about the rona is focused on that.

Luke O’Neill and the ‘medi-celebs’ gang included.

          1. millie

Have to agree there Mick. The ones who aren’t are busy actually trying to some meaningful work done.

          2. Brother Barnabas

            to an extent, yes

but I cannt think of any other who has their (unrelated) books for sale carefully displayed behind them whenever they make an appearance.. fat emperor, my botty

and I cant think either of any other who’s so eminently unqualified as ivor cummings who’s established such a profile in such a short period of time

he’s a manipulative liar and his fanboys are dopes

          3. Micko

Is that not just coz you don’t like what Cummings is saying though Brother?

“search your feelings you know it to be true…”

I think they’re all a shower of C’s. Even if I do agree with some of them.

          4. Brother Barnabas

            no, it’s not, micko

I’m against lockdowns and closures – and cant understand how eight months on, we still havent created a proper contact-tracing system, added the needed extra ICU capacity etc – and think FG and FF should be torn apart for their evident failures in that

            but cummings is a liar

          5. Micko

But, is that not what a lot of Cummings is saying, Brother?

He’s against lockdowns, he also wonders why ICU capacity hasn’t increased. (Possibly you both think for different reasons – but the conclusion is the same)

All the things you’re saying there – which I agree with you btw.

Cummings also agrees (along with the WHO) that Covid is not as serious as we once thought.

Sounds like you might have more in common with him than you think

            And that’s ok too. ;)

          6. Brother Barnabas

well why didnt you say all this before ?

where can I sign up to be a full-fledged ivor fanboy ?

and is there a patreon where I can send him cash?

or should I just buy his book 30 times ?

          7. Micko

Well Luke O’Neill has three books out at the mo

So you could buy one of his 30 times?

Coz, he’s TOTALLY different to all these Covid cash-grab artists.

They’re all the same – just one is tailored for you and one is tailored for me!

            Jesus wept…

      2. f_lawless

Cian that’s simply a nonsense post. There’s nothing “totally out of context”. The context is O’Neill’s Zoom call with schoolchildren. Adding quotation marks to the word data as a means to dismiss it, isn’t a valid form of argument.

O’Neill: “We may wear masks every winter, not in schools but in shops and so on, like you see n China”
Cummins: “Like you see in China? Only a few months ago we were talking about two to three weeks to flatten the curve. How did we become China in a few months?”

If English isn’t your first language or you’re a child who hasn’t yet learned about rhetoric as a form of expression then maybe you could mistake that text as “willfully deceptive”. It’s clear as day he’s simply speaking rhetorically to emphasise how far the goal posts have been moved since the public originally agreed to have their civil liberties restricted for a few weeks. Now we’re at a point where one of Ireland’s leading authorities on Covid-19 is telling schoolchildren that mandatory mask wearing “in shops and so on” may happen every winter “like you see in China”.

I think all those getting worked up about Ivor Cummins while willfully ignoring the blatantly disturbing things O’Neill was saying to schoolchildren are perhaps betraying their own unwillingness to psychologically confront the gradual shift in Ireland since March towards a more totalitarian-like society, instigated by the state and promoted by its approved messengers such as O’Neill. It’s easier to latch on to distractions and attack those.

        1. ReproBertie

I don’t see the word “mandatory” in the quote from Professor O’Neill. “We may” he says. Not “We will” or “We will have to”.

The totalitarian state stuff is hilarious. Just last week the gardaí had to be shamed into telling people to move along when they were drinking in Temple Bar but sure, we’re heading for a totalitarian state.

        2. Cian

It is out totally of context. It is an 8-second clip. We don’t know what was said up until that point in the zoom call, or what was said immediately afterwards..We don’t know if O’Neill was answering a question or was volunteering that information. There is no context to his statement.

Yes, I said “data”. In the tweet Ivor says “I added the ACTUAL DATA for context”. But in the video the data he shows stops October 9 which, very conveniently for him, ignores the 200 Irish Covid deaths since then.

And you are guilty of misinformation too. From an 8-second clip you said “one of Ireland’s leading authorities on Covid-19 is telling schoolchildren that mandatory mask wearing “in shops and so on” may happen every winter “like you see in China”.” – you fabricated the “mandatory” – nowhere in the clip is that word mentioned.

    2. Clampers Outside

No different than the environmentalists giving kids anxiety in telling them there’s only 12 years to save the world, or that we’re already too late…. Ffs!

About 10 years left on that clock now.

        1. Micko

Ye know. Unless we’re all willing to make changes that will drastically reduce our impact on this planet then we might as well give up.

Sure using the internet is one of the most damaging things you can do.

Server farms for F’s sake. Sooooo many resources and so much energy used.

We’re boned. Enjoy your life – you got to see and live the best

          1. ReproBertie

That’s the spirit Micko. Sorry future generations. We could have done something but it was hard.

          2. Micko

Well, when you stop posting here and using the internet, using transport, eating meat, using air travel, buying goods online, heating your home, using energy come back to me.

Problem with the way that most people think is that it’s someone else that’s causing the environment to fail. In reality, it’s all of us and none of us is willing to give up what we have.

All the little things we’re doing right now to use energy, all have a cumulative effect.

I heard someone once propose that the best way to solve the environment issue is to properly nourish and educate every single person on this planet and maybe, just maybe we’ll increase the IQ of the next few generations and hopefully they’ll figure a way out of the mess we’ve made of things. Interesting thought.

Coz we ain’t – we’re way too selfish.

          3. ReproBertie

“Well, when you stop posting here and using the internet, using transport, eating meat, using air travel, buying goods online, heating your home, using energy come back to me.”

I’ve heard that argument before and it’s nonsense. We absolutely need to change the way we do things, and I’m doing my part, but we don’t have to switch to an internet free, electricity free, vegan world to save the planet.

Reduce meat consumption, use cleaner energy, walk or cycle instead of taking the car, insulate your home, capture rainwater to use instead of treated water, use grey water for things like flushing the toilet, solar heating for water and, where possible, to generate power for the home, To put it in a simple slogan reduce, reuse, recycle. Turns out it’s not that hard after all.

          4. Micko

            Yeah, that’s absolute BS Bertie

            Sorry, but it’s delusional thinking

The amount of natural resources used in the creation of solar panels alone – and the batteries.

Jesus – don’t even start on the batteries.

          5. Micko

“The music video for “Despacito” set an Internet record in April 2018 when it became the first video to hit five billion views on YouTube. In the process, “Despacito” reached a less celebrated milestone: it burned as much energy as 40,000 U.S. homes use in a year.” – Fortune.com

          6. ReproBertie

It’s a matter of balance. Solar panel technology is improving all the time. Solar panels used to heat water are not the same as those used to generate electricity meaning they have less impact on the environment and both have less impact on the environment than burning fossil fuels.

It’s easier to be negative than make an effort though and you’ve already made it clear that you prefer the easy route.

Delusional thinking is relying on some future generation to fix it or assuming it’s just too big for us to fix.

          7. Micko

“you’ve already made it clear that you prefer the easy route.” Yes, yes- I’m a terrible human. We’ve been here before… shame away.

Look, coming to terms the actual reality of our situation is not the effing “easy route” let me tell you.

I’m interested in the facts. Nothing more.

I noticed you ignored my post about ‘Despacito’

40K US home power equivalent in a year for the most-watched YouTube video.
            40 Thousand homes!!!

And yo think “using grey water for things like flushing the toilet” is gonna make a dent. Gimme a break! ;-P

          8. ReproBertie

I get it MIcko. You don’t want to have to change and you’re afraid that people will make you change so it’s easier to undermine every argument for changing.

You’re only interested in facts? Well it’s a fact that using grey water eases demand on the water supply. Will me putting a bucket in the shower and using the water it captures to flush the toilet save the world? No, not on it’s own. Does that mean I shouldn’t do it? Of course not. The same goes for every time I walk or cycle instead of driving and every time I turn off sockets instead of leaving appliances on standby. Small things in themselves but they add up. Bigger picture wise there’s what I do with my vote, my choices and my voice. Maybe you don’t want to know about how small changes can make a difference but you’re not the only person listening.

          9. Micko

            Yep – sure.

Anyway, ‘Despacito’ – what ya gonna do about that?

You could always pee in that bucket in the shower? That’d help your grey water collection I’m sure.

            Absolutely delusional.

“British writer James Bridle cites a study in Japan that suggests that by 2030, the power requirements of digital services will outstrip the nation’s entire current generation capacity.” The Guardian

          10. ReproBertie

That wouldn’t be grey water then Micko.

It’s not all about the energy needs. It’s how we provide that energy. Last year, for example, renewable sources produced almost 40% of the UK’s electricity. Ireland was only 11% in 2018 but it’s growing. Japan is only at 15% but working towards 25% by 2030. Reducing energy consumption is a factor too but part of that is that individual effort you’re so down on.

          11. Nigel

Imagine trying to change things for the better only to have to have your energy drained dealing with this relentless cynical smug toxic nihilism.

          12. ReproBertie

Last week Micko was mocking me about being servile because I didn’t try to save the elderly. This week Micko sees no value in trying to save the planet for future generations.

          13. Nigel

I’ll argue with outright climate change deniers all day long, but there’s no justifyng anything to someone who is committed to not bothering.

          14. Cian

            @reprobertie
Last year, for example, renewable sources produced almost 40% of the UK’s electricity. Ireland was only 11% in 2018 but it’s growing.

Are you mixing apples with oranges? You seem to be mixing the % in electricity generation (UK 40%) to total energy (Ireland 11%).

            According to SEAI

            – in 2018 the overall renewable energy share in ireland was 11%
            and
            – In 2018 33.3% of electricity came from renewable sources.

            https://www.seai.ie/data-and-insights/seai-statistics/key-statistics/renewables/

          15. ReproBertie

Thanks Cian. The 11% was the only figure I could find. I would have searched for longer but a house in the US needed the energy to keep warm.

          16. Nigel

Now if they’d just stop putting the wind farms on unstable boglands, we’d be flying instiead of sinking.

      1. Brother Barnabas

when we’re talking about the catastrophic consequences of climate change, probably best to err on the side of caution

      2. bisted

…I got the impression that it was the kids telling the ‘environmentalists’ they had failed…I am really proud of this new generation and for an ordinary girl like Greta Thunberg doing extraordinary things…hope they can wrest the green flag from the bunch of political opportunists who currently fly it as a flag of convenience in this country…

        1. v AKA Frilly Keane

well d’ya know what now Bisto
I really want to agree with you

but if the ‘wan in my gaff is anything to go by
          lemme tell ye
5 minute showers would do a awful lot of saving the planet
than just skipping school for the afternoon and going around town with a placard
          and a Starbuck keepie cup

          f’ing 25, 30 even 40 minute showers
and the amount of plastic bottles of crap

and the grub, rice, grains, homemade bread? – naw
spice bags, wow burgers, tayto sangwiches in white sliced

          Vintage or Branded Quality Clothes
          Naw
          Fast Fashion nonsense
          BooHoo, Pennys, Misguided Zaful
          ALL Awful

and she has a Mammy that hates Chain Store stuff
and is to more than willing to spend stupid money

        2. Micko

          Not a fan of Greta.

I think anyone who makes a big song and dance of sailing somewhere and then FLIES two sailors over to retrieve her boat and sail it back is – well, full of it.

But hopefully, future generations will figure a way out of this for us

          1. Micko

            See my above posts guys.

Unless we are all willing to give up almost everything – humans are done.

Not in our lifetimes of course or our kids – but our grandkids – Yikes!

          2. millie

Us – the little people, the masses, whatever you want to call it – doing what we can is like throwing a glass of water onto an inferno, that’s true. We can only do so much. I would say that without the support of our governments, and more than that, a cohesive and united response to climate change needs to be nailed down and rolled out across the board. This requires a global response. And it needs to be consistent, holding large companies and countries who are responsible for the largest emissions to account.

We’ve seen that we can do this kind of global response, as per the Covid crisis this year, even if it has been politicised and contentious, but that it can be done if there is a political will for it, even to the detriment of economic interests.

          3. Brother Barnabas

would you prepared to, say, close down factories and business, ban travel and force everyone to stay at home, micko?

mad idea, probably never take off.. but you know

          4. Micko

            Honestly Millie

That’d be great, but they’re not going to do it.

Which is why I’d maybe place my faith in future generations. We’re too selfish and interested in getting next shiny thing our neighbours have.

I mean, the minerals mined and children killed in Africa alone, that we go along with just so we can get emails in McDonalds

Shameful – we’re too far gone.

            https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/oct/12/phone-misery-children-congo-cobalt-mines-drc

          5. Micko

I tell ya what I would be interested in Brother – and I’ve proposed this before..

Is if we all agreed after a date – (say after Paddies day) to globally lockdown every single year for 6 weeks. Until the end of April

Everyone who can, does so. We all work from home, don’t go out, don’t fly if we can etc

Not mandatory – but as an initiative to help the environment. Companies could get behind it and so could governments. It could be a great initiative.

Think of the help to the environment that would do. 6 weeks a year recovery time for the planet.

All our events could be based around it – no gigs, no shows – nothing.

But, everyone knows about it and everyone is able to prepare fr it – save money – whatever.

          6. Nigel

People, you do not have to give up ‘almost everything.’ Vote for more politicians who will change farming ptactices, support renewable energy, install pedestrian, bycycle and public transport networks, or pressure existing polticians to do all those things, and you’re well on the way. International agreements to impose humantiarian, environmental and labour standrads on imported goods and components in imported goods will also help because currently there is simply no such thing as an ethical or eco-friendly electronic device.

    3. SOQ

This is funny- a guy who clearly has a conflict of interest attempts to frighten children with vaccines along with health passwords and unremovable bracelets and all you can do is bitch at the person who highlighted it?

Health passwords and unremovable bracelets have nothing to do with science – that is politics and if people are allowed to preach politics to children then you should have no objection to other people doing likewise?

      1. Cian

I honestly don’t know because this “video” has been presented with zero context.

But you are 100% believing Ivor’s “explanation” of what happened – that he “attempts to frighten children with vaccines”.

Who are these people in school? Are they all “children”? I mean, if they are a 6th year class then many of them are 18 (adults) the remainder are 17. What percentage of a 6th year class will be 18 by the time a vaccine is available? They will be adults and make their own decision to take the vaccination (or not).

Health passwords and unremovable bracelets have nothing to do with science – that is politics and if people are allowed to preach politics to children then you should have no objection to other people doing likewise?
Are you suggesting that experts should refrain from talking outside their direct speciality? Like, for example, an engineer (say) should restrict himself to discussing engineering and not, (again hypothetically) talking about pandemics?

      2. SOQ

When it comes to preaching politics- it is not acceptable in any classroom setting- end of.

Did Ivor Cummins fake those words against O’Neills image? No he did not- so they were actually said.

I am pretty sure O’Neill’s audience can be clarified.

        1. ReproBertie

“When it comes to preaching politics- it is not acceptable in any classroom setting- end of.”
What garbage. What do you think a Civics class is?

          1. SOQ

Actually I said “I am homophobic now is it?” which was a rhetorical question but nice to know you are still recording my comments.

  2. Shayna

I couldn’t view your link f_ – however, I was in Hong Kong in ’98 – a lot of Hong Kongese were wearing masks. I don’t know, if you’ve ever been, but it’s a tad smelly – the fragrance of dried shrimp is overwhelming, the hordes of small people, who are entirely rude to Westerners and spit all the time on the street isn’t entirely welcoming. The masks were a protection from coal-fired power-stations – smog – not shrimp smell!
Also, good luck to Mickey Harte in his new job. The Wee County might rise again – buichós le dia!

  3. Shayna

Cú – I did! Shayna can’t even surf – paddle board, kick an O’Neills size 5, póc fada and all the rest of it. But to be fair, none of us can. I can’t seek out Pat Spillane at Pat Spillane’s Bar outside Kenmare and thank him for one the loveliest argumentative afternoons that my Dad (Big Seamie {RIP}) enjoyed about the GAA. The two of them went head to head in statistics – Dad defeated Pat in his greater knowledge of Hurling. Dad went to every hurling All-Ireland Final that I can remember. He used to throw me over the turn-stiles at Croke Park – I remember Jimmy Barry Murphy in ’72 – also Mickey Harte.

  4. Shayna

I was 6 in ’72. Throwing kids over the turn-stiles at Croke Park of that age was commonplace. Wasn’t it?

  5. GiggidyGoo

Varadkar trying to give the impression he’s relevant.

So, is he leaking this time? Is his lockdown threat a confidential piece of info?

Who knows? But one thing is for certain, no one with any sense trusts him, nor will trust him going forward.

(Has the ethics watchdog acted on Paul Murphys written request yet. )
Has An Garda Siochana questioned him about his giving a confidential state document to his friend yet, or will Garda Harris repay being given top job?

    1. Shayna

GiggidyGoo, Leo Varadakar became an also ran at the last General Election where Sinn Féin won. Who cares what Leo did next? Oh, the Taoiseach thing in a while? It’s all going great so far. My ancestors, well, not sure where they are – but I’m imagining gnashing of teeth and kicking of asses, FF and FG together? I did think we (SF) won? Maybe next time we’ll offer more potential TDs?

        1. bisted

…fair play to Leo…for someone who has never won an election he’s playing a blinder…even finishing third he managed to stay on as taoiseach for months with a cabinet that included some members who were not even re-elected…he is taoiseach in waiting but still manages to act like the leader of the opposition…watch and learn SF…somehow I feel you have missed your chance…

      1. GiggidyGoo

Hi Shayna. FF FG LAB etc. have destroyed this country in recent times. SF – I don’t know how they’d perform, but it’s my contention that, as untested in real Government in the south (Northern Ireland isn’t governed by SF. / DUP, but by Westminster) they should have the chance to prove or disprove themselves.
Leo cares about what Leo does next. He’s making quite a fool of himself. Any notions he had of some international role are gone. He’s shown himself as a leaker, a liar, and cannot be trusted with confidential information.

  6. Gabby

Schoolgirls told not to wear revealing tight leggings (Irish Examiner). Now there’s something to cheer us (men) up for Christmas and distract from the thought of a New Year lockdown.
Time for a debate about the sexualisation of schoolchildren. Does mum know best about her daughter’s dress sense? Bring on the psychologists, sociologists and investigative reporters. This is a major issue.

      1. ReproBertie

I can’t believe there wasn’t a single dissenting voice in the staff room who could have reminded the teachers that they are dealing with children and if they are getting distracted by what children are wearing then maybe teaching children is not for them.

Precisely. It’s a really disgusting and regressive attitude, pushing the blame for a teacher’s discomfort (ew) onto teenage girls, many of whom would be learning to deal with their own growing bodies and the difficult feelings that come from that. I mean, teachers are supposed to be the adults in this situation ffs!

        2. v AKA Frilly Keane

That’s what I’m struggling with as well

          and its a mixed school

that no one in the staff room recognised it was sexism
at the very least surely they should have recognised sexism

          all the other stuff
          Sexualisation, shaming students, degrading students
but yet – only one cohort of their students

Or that those very same teachers were being undermined themselves – might distract the teacher

In a Mixed Post Primary School in 2020
What should be the very bastion of equality, and gender equity

I seriously hope this runs and runs
and fair play to the students, all of them, and their parents
          keep her lit lads
          Mortify them
          Shame them
          Make a show of them

          Enough of this
          Enough shaming

Let this be the end of girls and women being blamed for others behaviour
might distract the teacher Jaysus wept

          Hate to say it
doesn’t say much for the teaching compliment there in Pres Carlow

    1. v AKA Frilly Keane

      That wound me up
Reading about Pres getting the Class rep/ head girl to implement
Christ, like something from the 50s

anyway here’s a petition to sign if ye’re as ticked off as I am
      https://www.change.org/p/students-across-ireland-sexism-against-female-students-in-school-by-the-staff-and-students?recruiter=false&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&utm_term=psf_combo_share_initial&recruited_by_id=60d5dee0-2caf-11eb-bf8c-3fa790a178f6&use_react=false

      On good news there
the lads in the school are now wearing leggings to school

      Hon Carla’

    2. GiggidyGoo

If they forgot to change after PE, Tight leggings could cause deep vein thrombosis if they wore them during normal class. lol

the olfactory hum of teenagers on a bus put me off the idea of teaching for life

        1. Junkface

Ha ha! This is so true. I once got on a bus for work years ago, walked upstairs, it was full of stinky teenagers and they were eating cheese & onion tayto crisps! Yeeauuch! Unbearable, I went back downstairs right away. If I could have nuked the bus I would have.

          1. bisted

…I once got a part-time job teaching maths to a group of apprentice plumbers and hairdressers…only lasted two weeks and was good fun but put me of the notion of teaching for life…thanks kids…

We need a Dail debate, a statement from the Minister of Education and a commission of enquiry. And a report compiled by psychologists, sociologists, cultural anthropologists and leading members of the fashion industry.

    1. ian-oh

      Or burqas.

That will spare the feelings of all I’m sure?

Because as we all know, clothes wearing can cause all sorts. I believe 9/11 was a result of a poorly worn pashmina. A PLO one I believe and those Taliban and Al Queda, being Sunni, did not take that too well what with the PLO being Shia’s.

Apparently the CIA wardrobe department were at the root of it all. As per usual. And people thought Zoolander was just a comedy! Wake up people, the global fashion industry fooled us all.

      Mugatu = Q.

      I said it.

Anyway, back to reality, twas a very dumb thing for the school to say, FFS its hard enough being a teenager in normal times.

    Bake off Final
I thought Dave had it, cause he won the Technical
and he was the most improved baker from say Week 1

but nobody will complain that the Star Baker in Week 1
and the youngest ever, was your Season 11 champion
    Peter Sawkins

Loved the challenges again, especially the Signature
    Custard Slices
these can be as simple as shop bought puff and shop bought custard
with some – shop bought curd, puree, angel delight or jam from the press
    and shop bought icing

or the whole mousse, crème pat with a hint of home made whatever
hand stretched sugar dickie bows on fondant from scratch
with full Puff – laminated with your own homemade butter
The kinda stuff our old Bake’Sheet pal Martco would be at

Also the Technical- perfect for the final, way way tricky, and an every household favourite
I love when they do these normal shop buys
like Snowballs, Fondant Fancies, and Wagon Wheels etc
you get to see them deconstructed into each of their parts
I wouldn’t be trying out a Walnut Whip now
But I’ll use the recipe for the Sable Bikkie alright
    here https://thegreatbritishbakeoff.co.uk/recipes/all/prue-leith-coffee-walnut-whips/

    on a Rough Puff note
It is one of my favourite Pastries to make btw
I found it interesting that David threw some flaked almonds into his
I would throw a dusting of icing sugar (sometimes flavoured) myself
so ground almonds would make sense
(a beaten egg or two for savoury)
So I wouldn’t mind hearing from ye about it
    Ta, V
