Polling day

The conclusion of the president election campaign makes up most of this mornings news. You can find rolling coverage over the course of the day here and the first reports of a low turnout here.

 

Members of the Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) have voted to accept a pay proposal for newly appointed teachers. In a national ballot the TUI members voted by a margin of 53% to 47% to support the proposal.

 

The Irish Times reports that the National Broadband Plan may cost more than €3 billion, with Government officials working on a ‘plan B’ amid fears over a possible collapse of process.

 

A bill to increase the retirement age to 70 has begun its passage through the Oireachtas. The Public Service Superannuation Bill is now entering the second stage of the process.

 

The charity Front Line Defenders, which promotes the protection of human rights workers worldwide has been named as one of the winners of the 2018 United Nations Human Rights Prize. Front Line Defenders dedicated the award to human rights workers around the world.
