Following on from yesterday, the Taoiseach has said debt reduction, increasing some of the capital budgets, and the establishment of a new sovereign wealth fund, are among the options being considered for using expected surpluses in the public finances.

 

The operator of the Aer Lingus Regional service, Dublin-based Emerald Airlines, has been warned by IALPA that it may ballot its members for industrial action up to and including strikes if the carrier’s management does not agree to negotiate a collective agreement with the union.

 

SIPTU members working in water services in local authorities across the country will begin a campaign of industrial action on 7 June which may take the form of strike action.

 

Ciaran Rohan, general secretary of the AHCPS has said new pay talks must make up the shortfall between wages and inflation for the country’s 340,000 public servants. 

 

Siptu members employed by the National Ambulance Service (NAS) are balloting on industrial action in a dispute over pay.

 

Experts have warned that AI poses risk to health of millions and could cause social division in an open letter.

 

Representatives of large supermarkets chains, smaller shops and the grocery industry are due to attend a meeting of the Retail Forum at the Department of Enterprise later today, to discuss the continued high cost of groceries despite a general decline in inflation.

 

And finally, Ireland is likely to suffer a severe funding shortfall in the next five to 15 years without a significant overhaul of the taxation system, the Oireachtas Committee on Budgetary Oversight will be warned today.
