Today's Irish Times also carries news of a resumption of the "unfinished business" campaign by Section 39 staff and Community Employment supervisors, while the Business Post reported yesterday that a decision on increasing the minimum wage has been deferred by the Low Pay Commission.

It's reported that Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris will seek Government approval for over €100 million in additional funding to assist the third-level sector with coronavirus costs, while the Government is expected to commit to a spending package approaching €7 billion in its July stimulus plan due for publication this week.

 

Elsewhere, the media industry worldwide is in bad shape (huge job losses were announced last week at the BBC and The Guardian) as circulations plummet and advertising is down by 50 to 60 per cent across Irish titles. Nevertheless, during the pandemic interest in news content has surged as audiences seek out reliable and trustworthy news sources.

Minister for everything, including media, Catherine Martin TD, is advised today by Michael Foley (professor emeritus at the School of Media, TU Dublin and a former Irish Times media correspondent) that the growing interest and need for verified independent news might be the basis for an "imaginative joined-up policy" on media.
