A new report from the Economic and Social Research Institute suggests that there has been a marked drop in the level of home ownership in recent years, and this occurrence had been particularly acute for younger-aged households. The report warned that lower homeownership rates mean a higher proportion of households in the rental sector and the continuation of rental payments into retirement.

 

The government has announced that school transport fees are set to be scrapped for the 2022-2023 school year, as part of a new package to curb back-to-school costs, and the back-to-school clothing and footwear allowance is also set to be increased by €100 per child from August.

Meanwhile, two senior Tory ministers have resigned from their positions as Boris Johnson’s leadership faces a fresh crisis. Publishing damning resignation letters within minutes of each other, Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid pointed to a lack of grip in Downing Street.

 

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has arrived in Kyiv on what is the first official visit of a taoiseach to the country. He will meet Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky later today, to express the Irish people's solidarity with the people of Ukraine in the face of what he will call Russia's illegal and immoral war.

 

International surrogacy should be recognised in Ireland for the first time under a system of parental orders and guidelines, a special Oireachtas committee will recommend today. The Committee on International Surrogacy was established by the Government and given three months to make recommendations. This followed pressure from campaigners and legal experts to address the issue as part of forthcoming domestic surrogacy legislation.
