The latest Ryanair news reveals unions are set to announce the date of the "biggest strike action the company has ever seen". Spanish, Italian, Belgian, Dutch and Portuguese unions are expected to declare a 24-hour stoppage on September 28 at a press conference in Brussels today.

 

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Dublin yesterday evening in a rally organised to protest against the removal of housing activists from a city centre property by masked Gardaí and men. A number of politicians and civil liberties groups have criticised the eviction. This all comes with the announcement a new State agency is to free up land for 150,000 new homes over 20 years. 

 

A report published last week found the cost of childcare in Ireland is a major factor in discouraging women from participating in the workforce. This Irish Times article examines how other countries manage the costs better, with reports of €1 after-school care in Belgium. 

 

In Cork, SuperValu has been accused of using the planning laws to “thwart competition”, jeopardising employment, after the owner of one of the chain’s supermarkets objected to proposals to expand a rival store across the road from his business.

 

An article on the front page of The Daily Telegraph caught my eye this morning as the Archbishop of Canterbury condemned the gig economy and zero hour contracts calling them the "reincarnation of an ancient evil." Justin Welby also took aim at companies in “new industries” which he said failed to pay a “real living wage”.

 

Students all over the country received their Junior Cert results yesterday with one school in Limerick boasting six students receiving all As. Speaking of tests... can you tell me how many tears there are in a bottle of gin?
