The public sector must lead by example and commit to recruiting members of the Travelling community to bridge the “significant employment gap” and break down existing barriers, an Oireachtas committee heard yesterday. The joint committee on key issues affecting the Traveller community heard that the unemployment rate remains high at around 80% despite several reports and pilot initiatives over the past two decades.

A bid by liquidators to have stock removed from the former Debenhams store in Limerick city failed on Monday night, after about 100 ex-staff and supporters staged a sit-down protest at the premises over their claim for redundancy from the ailing company.

 

The government yesterday announced that stamp duty on the block buying of ten or more residential houses would rise to 10% and up to 50% of future housing estates are to be set aside for purchase by owner-occupiers, as the government seeks to curb the influence of so-called ‘cuckoo funds’ on the property market. 


The online booking system will open today for the 45-49 age cohort, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has confirmed. The HSE expects that some people in this cohort will be able to receive a first dose before the end of the month.
