The Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection made a series of recommendations yesterday, including proposing that the State pension age should not rise beyond the age of 66. This is at odds with the report of the Pension Commission last October, which recommended the retirement age should be set at 66 and three months in 2028, 66 and six months in 2029, and 66 and nine months in 2030 before hitting 67 in 2031. Paschal Donohoe indicated that a decision would be made by the end of March.

 

According to the Irish Independent there are shortages of over 40,000 staff in the tourism industry including chefs, waiting staff and restaurant and bar managers. Fáilte Ireland is set to publish the figures next week when it unveils its most comprehensive research to date on the tourism and hospitality labour market. 

 

The Irish Times reports that the Irish Government will examine measures to help offset the impact of rampant inflation. On Wednesday evening, Taoiseach Micheál Martin told his party that the Government was looking at measures to “enable people to cope with the cost of living increases” and to protect disposable incomes “during this difficult time”. 

 

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar are at odds over the €100 energy credit. Varadkar wants a “more generous” credit to alleviate the soaring cost of electricity over the winter months while Micheal Marin is worried about the impact of increasing the credit due to inflation.

 

Lastly Roy Keane is the odds on favourite to be named to new Sunderland manager. He made his managerial debut with the club back in 2006, guiding them to promotion to the premier league, before leaving the club in 2018
