Hundreds of public service workers who were rehired for one year after their retirement will not be allowed remain at work until the age of 70.

This was confirmed today by the Minister for Finance and Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe.

Between December 2017 and December 2018 some 646 state employees took up one year employment offers after they had reached the compulsory retirement age of 65.

However, in the final days of last year the law was changed to allow public servants remain at work until the age of 70.

But this right will not be extended to those who availed of the interim one year contract prior to the change in the law.

In a report on his Department's website tonight Minister Donohoe stated that the terms of the interim arrangements were clear and unambiguous.

Therefore he said that any changes in this area would not be appropriate.
