Sweater weather

Industrial action in community and voluntary sector agencies continues by Fórsa members in Galway and Mayo tomorrow (Thursday), while one day strike action by staff at Enable Ireland, Cork and Kerry, will take place on Friday (23rd September).

The Examiner reports this morning that the four-day workweek is working. The message emerges from the initial results reported by companies shifting to four-day workweeks in pilot programs run by 4 Day Week Global.

A demonstration, organised by the Cost of Living Coalition, will take place in Dublin on Saturday to demand the Government do more to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, which is “crushing” families and households. The group, which is made up of 30 organisations including trade unionists, student and pensioner bodies and opposition political parties, will urge the Government to take radical action on the cost-of-living and housing crisis.

Elsewhere, protests spread to 15 cities across Iran overnight over the death of the young woman Mahsa Amini after her arrest by the country’s morality police. Public anger has flared since authorities announced the death of 22-year-old Amini, after her arrest by the morality police responsible for enforcing a strict dress code for women.

Meanwhile, back here, Cabinet has given approval to a new “flexible” pension system that will see the pension age remain at 66, but will give people the option to work until they’re 70 in return for higher payments.

This after a new survey shows that more than two in five people in Ireland without a pension have either delayed starting one or delayed their planned retirement date due to the cost-of-living crisis. The survey was commissioned by Pensions Awareness Week. It also reveals that 4% of pension holders have actually cashed in their pensions in order to deal with soaring energy and other costs.

And finally, the Neighbourhood brings us this morning’s zen with ‘sweater weather’ to match the changing season.
