Almost 19,000 teachers across the country are on strike today, leading to the closure of hundreds of secondary schools for the day. The strike action follows an ongoing pay dispute.

 

The election of candidates will not proceed in the Tipperary constituency this Saturday due to the death of a candidate. It means none of the seats in the constituency will be filled this weekend. Instead, there will have to be a vote on a later date, as nominations will have to be reopened. This will delay the vote by at least a week or possibly longer.


University workers are to stage a fresh round of walkouts in disputes over pay and pensions, the University and College Union (UCU) said. Its members at 74 UK universities will take part in 14 days of strike action during February and March.


The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) is preparing to launch a major campaign on illegal working hours faced by non-consultant hospital doctors, which will involve mass collection and submission of claims under working time law.

A new poll shows more than a quarter of people have changed their mind on how they will vote in the upcoming general election. PR360's '2020 Leaders' survey shows the overwhelming majority of voters (96%) wanted the election to deliver change. When asked to choose one of the two main political party leaders to be Taoiseach, 53% chose Micheál Martin vs 47% for Leo Varadkar. Meanwhile, four in 10 people say they have ‘tuned out’ of the campaign.
