Workers at Hovis' Belfast factory have called off strike action after a new pay deal was offered

A planned all-out strike at Hovis’s Belfast bakery, which had been due at midnight on Friday, has been called off.

Shop stewards say they’ve agreed to suspend the action after the company made a “significantly improved” pay offer (they had previously been offered a 3.2 per cent rise).

Unite official Sean McKeever confirmed that his union would now be balloting members on the fresh financial offer by management.

He said: “Strike action is always a last resort for workers and our union, but we were left with no alternative but to proceed with plans as a result of the total failure of Hovis bosses to take seriously our members’ pay expectations.

But in light of the significantly improved pay offer, our team of shop stewards have agreed to suspend the action and we will consult with workers about the next steps.”
