Summer Sounds
by Niall Shanahan

Fórsa national secretary Peter Nolan spoke to Eoin Beatty on Kfm's Kildare Today programme yesterday about the More Power to You campaign. You can listen back here (from 13:43). Peter highlights Ireland's relatively low representation and participation in local government, the opportunities for communities to address carbon emission targets at county level, and the campaign's call for an audit of public land available for publicly constructed housing.

Congress general secretary Patricia King writes in the Irish Examiner today that sick pay is finally on the mend.

Elsewhere, the employer body Ibec placed this sponsored piece in yesterday's Irish Times about its campaign (More than meets the eye) to support the recovery of Ireland’s 'experience economy', which includes the hospitality, retail, travel, food, drink, tourism and entertainment industries, accounting for one-fifth of all private sector employment, as the State emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Facebook has opened remote work, including working remotely from other countries, to people at all levels of the organisation and says this won’t alter its tax status in Ireland. Meanwhile Bloomberg reports on an emerging pattern in the US where employees are quitting their jobs rather than return to the office, and Denis Staunton reports that London’s restaurants are struggling for staff after an exodus of EU citizens.

Zen

Your Zen moment this morning comes from Gemma Dunleavy, the talented Dubliner hailing from Sheriff Street, who yesterday celebrated her debut EP Up De Flats hitting over a million streams. The title track captures something of a Dublin summer feel. If you weren't watching already, Gemma is one to watch.

Have a lovely weekend.

Niall
