Officials at An Bord Pleanála are pushing to retain the body’s name in a pending overhaul of planning law, hitting out at a move by Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien to rename the crisis-struck authority as An Coimisiún Pleanála. Fórsa has said it is compiling a response to the legislation through a survey of members.

Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that a group of Irish citizens have been cleared to evacuate Gaza through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt today.

Back home, the Teachers’ Union of Ireland has found that the recruitment crisis in second level schools is worsening, after surveying 104 schools across the country. TUI is calling for the Government to take action after a survey it carried out revealed that 64% of 104 secondaries have unfilled vacancies, and just 1% of principals believe enough is being done to tackle the issue.

A salary cap of €250,000 will be introduced at RTÉ in tandem with plans to shrink the broadcaster’s workforce by 400 people between now and 2028, director general Kevin Bakhurst told staff on Tuesday as the Government confirmed it would give the broadcaster an additional €56 million in funding to overcome a short-term cash crisis.

And Senator David Norris will retire in January 2024, it has been confirmed. The Independent senator has been serving in the Seanad for the last 36 years. In an interview with Trinity News, Norris said he planned to retire in the new year and move to Cyprus. The academic has had a colourful career in Leinster House, most known for his work on overthrowing Ireland’s laws which criminalised homosexuality.
