I look forward to Senator Fintan Warfield bringing forward Bills to ban other types of dubious, unscientific treatments or random self help gurus and groups.

If a gay person wants to voluntarily do pretty much anything they want, take whatever courses they want, to get whatever perceived outcome they want from it, let them do it. That includes living a chaste life that they can happily reconcile with their religious beliefs, if that’s what they actually want.

    1. dylad

The point is that vulnerable people are being coerced into doing something against their will, based on false belief.

      1. newsjustin

It’s certainly wrong and maybe illegal to force people into doing a course or treatment they don’t want to do – be it hypnosis, chiropractic, counselling. But then, there are courses of treatment (See the anorexia comment below) were its a good thing to strongly encourage (maybe even coerce) people into treatment. What’s the solution? Ban all treatments in case someone is forced into doing something they don’t want to do?

Again though, there is a difference between trying to convince people they are a different sexuality and simply trying to facilitate them to live chaste lives (If they want to) be they gay or straight.

          1. newsjustin

Absolutely right. All the more reason why anyone who wants to take whatever steps they want, to get whatever outcome they want, surrounding their own sexuality should be free to do so. As long as it doesn’t harm others, no force or duress is involved, and that these courses are not explicitly harmful.

It’s a difficult one, to be fair. You want the best for people, you want people to do as they please. But some people don’t necessarily want to behave in a way that we would recommend for them. But they get to decide for themselves.

    2. SOQ

If there was a public group who encouraged people to be anorexic or self harm, would you support them too? Or would you say that those people should be seeking proper professional help?

The damage these ‘gay conversion’ groups do is well documented They reinforce internalised homophobia to the point where serious mental health issues can arise.

There is no religious freedom clause when someone is driven to suicide because of this nonsense, they should be held to account in a court of law.

    Garda psychics?

“On the final day of prosecution evidence, it also emerged that gardaí sent the sub aqua unit to Ardmore in Co Waterford after a water diviner told them they would find Mr Ryan’s body there… He [Garda] said his understanding was that the diviner uses “psychic powers” using two rods over a map”

The Tipperary murder trial continues to throw up illuminating surprises. Yesterday, we learned Gardai follow leads from psychics. They sent a team to Waterford based upon a psychic doing their stuff over an ordnance survey map. Pity you can’t FOI the Gardai about operational matters, what other cases have they use psychics in? Mary Boyle, Philip Cairns, Tina Satchwell, Shergar, Lord Lucan?

They are obliged to follow up on every lead no matter how seemingly spurious

Europe is rock solid behind us? They “have our back”? They’re steadfast.

Is this the same EU which insisted they would only extend the 29 March Brexit date in return for the UK having a specific plan to get the Brexit deal approved? And yet they granted an extension to 12 April without any quid pro quo. What else will they give change their minds about?

Is this the same EU which forced Ireland to shoulder 40% of the Eurozone banking debt in 2010? And what did we get for bailing out bondholders in France, Germany and the UK? Loans carrying usurious interest rates.

Of course the words of solidarity are welcome. How about a “political declaration” or something in writing though?

    1. SOQ

You omit to mention that Ireland has also changed its mind, therefore no divergence of opinion. Ireland is the country that wants a no deal Brexit least after all.

    2. ReproBertie

There were conditions to the April 12th extension but sure facts don’t matter when you have a line to repeat.

    3. GiggidyGoo

I’d prefer friends to stand beside me, not behind he. Caesar had a bit problem with people standing behind him.

Come friday it’ll be ‘I declare this extension on the extension open’

If there’s a long extension, I wonder what FF’s reason will be to keep the C&S agreement alive.

    4. Spaghetti Hoop

The EU didn’t change their minds – they offered a concession to the Brits…who keep begging for concessions.

Will you please just start your own news site and stop piggybacking this one? More power to your elbow, but you’re like the kid in class who will not put his hand down now.

It’s been annoying for a good while now. It’s funny, why do these types get so drawn to the papers posts?

Johnny [April 9, 2019 at 11:42 am] You waste your whole life annoyed, must be exhausting

johnny [April 9, 2019 at 3:51 pm] oh I had no idea you read mine,I never read yours:)

          2. johnny

-Cian do you have nothing better to do-genuine question ?
There’s a lot more to life than constantly apologizing/spinning for FG-i and many other commentators on here presume your getting paid do it, if not seriously reevaluate your life choices.
Yesterday on a finance topic which you haven’t literally a breeze about, you equated criminality with non payment of mortgage debts-thats 19th Century Dickens stuff, bring back the debtors prisons, meanwhile Minister Madigan is getting sued not just by KBC but also Ulster Bank over mortgages !
Did your mum not teach you any manners, constantly butting in like a nosey oul won.

“the Minister for Justice had the power to grant firearm certificates to foreign personnel “where it is deemed necessary to do so” and that the Garda was consulted about any such decision…A reciprocal arrangement is in place since 2013 between An Garda Síochána and the PSNI relating to the carriage of firearms in relation to certain people travelling between the two jurisdictions.””

reports the Irish Times today, glaringly omitting the fact that heavily armed PSNI officers were transporting the Garda Commissioner on a routine trip. No-one is objecting to armed PSNI/Garda being allowed in each other’s jurisdictions for specified reasons, but there’s a big difference between those exceptional circumstances and the taxi-ing that took place on 25 March.

Has GSOC started an investigation yet? They’d be investigating the decision of the Garda Commissioner to approve the deployment of heavily armed PSNI officers for a routine task on 25 March and the “misunderstanding” at the gates of Garda HQ.

9 days late and I bet a few hundred k over budget, the PwC report on the scandalous cost overrun at the National Childrens Hospital is supposed to be presented to the Cabinet today. Presumably it will have to be checked out by the Attorney General before being selectively leaked to Leo’s favorite media.

And of course there are those who think PwC is deeply conflicted in its role of scrutinising a company for a government, both of which provide huge funding to PwC.

    https://www.pbp.ie/pwc-and-national-childrens-hospital/

    1. Cian

eoin, who should have written the report?

The state, through various departments, agencies, councils, pays million to all the main consultancy firms. Firms in Ireland also use these same firms – so they are all equally ‘conflicted’.

On the other hand, if they choose a small mom-and-pop firm to write this report I’m sure you’d be the first to criticise them for not going to a big firm.

      1. eoin

” Who should have written the report [about the scandalous cost overrun at the National Childrens Hospital]?”

I don’t know. Given the amount of government spending and the number of organisations spending govt money, maybe the govt should consider establishing a body to “audit” such spending to ensure it represents value for money. In other countries they sometimes create a role “comptroller” to do that role. Maybe in Ireland’s case, we could emphasise the role would investigate “general” spending rather than specific to any one cost heading.

        What do you think?

        1. Cian

Would you be happy if the comptroller and auditor general were to perform this task? Is that not a huge conflict of interest that one arm of the state is auditing another?

          1. bisted

…the problem appears to be that the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General have shown themselves to be totally impartial…staffed by department insiders who cannot be given the runaround…but probably that they represent value for money…

They’re very strict in Dubai. British woman arrested as she travelled to Dubai for her ex-husband’s funeral. She’s been detained for the last three weeks because she previously wrote to her husband, who was leaving her for another woman, on Facebook

“I hope you go under the ground you idiot. Damn you. You left me for this horse…You married a horse you idiot.”

    https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-47862596

Pity Dubai isn’t so harsh on drug trafficking kingpins.

NYT on those Limerick jobs Eoin-AG Barr is before the house in like 10 mins-9.30 NY live feed at bottom.

“But when asked by Mr. Wyden at a Senate Finance Committee hearing late last month about the arrangement, Mr. Mnuchin said of Mr. Deripaska that “his children did in no way benefit from sanctions relief.”
A Treasury Department spokeswoman sought to clarify Mr. Mnuchin’s statement last week, saying that “Deripaska’s children were legally entitled to shares stemming from a divorce settlement that predated the sanctions.”

Thanks Johnny. Looks like the whole sanctions business was aimed at getting Yanks onto the board of Rusal. Accepting a small shareholding reduction by Deripaska who the US continues to accuse of the worst type of gangsterism looks crazy when he still controls 45%.

Is it any wonder Irelands most successful and richest businessman lives here,FG is missing out on a once in a lifetime opportunity to position Ireland as a leader in medical weed.We have it all and with the UK imploding, its truly an amazing opportunity for Ireland. Why a supposedly pro business political party is blowing this is beyond me.

“Legalising the domestic production of cannabis for medical purposes was, Cardona continued, a logical and non-controversial extension of the decision to permit patients access to the drug: “I think all of the people in this room share the same view that if there [are] proven remedial and therapeutic effects from medicinal cannabis that can alleviate pain, it is our duty to make this accessible to the public. It is only right that we make access to these products easier … safer and cheaper for our patients.”

Given its long-standing and proud reputation in pharmaceutical manufacturing, Malta is home to a wealth of expertise and resources that can be easily translated to the production of medical cannabis. This is central to its ambition to position itself as a centre of excellence in the industry. “We want to, and we will, be one of the first countries to offer a high grade, genuine quality product for the rest of Europe,” Cardona said.”

“According to Galea, Malta’s ultimate aim when it comes to attracting medical cannabis investments is to replicate its achievements in pharmaceuticals and the life sciences. In doing so, he said, Malta and both foreign and local companies can work together to not only establish an important and exponentially growing sector in Europe but also position Malta at its forefront.”

C’mon FG its a fantastic billion euro industry, green power, high paying jobs, its the future,Malta is leaving you behind,I wonder if a certain Irishman is lining up an investment,oh man that new stuff makes me so paranoid :)

links to two recent,FREE research reports on Europe and weed.

“Home to more than 740 million people, a population more than double that of the United States and Canada combined, Europe is set to become the world’s largest legal cannabis market over the next five years. In the last 12 months alone, the European cannabis industry has grown more than in the last six years. Six countries have announced new legislation and over €500m has been invested in European cannabis businesses and as our exclusive research shows, Europe’s cannabis market is estimated to be worth up to €123bn by 2028.”

    https://prohibitionpartners.com/reports/

    -this is on medical.

“report provides an in-depth look at the varied cannabis business markets and sectors in Europe, including:
Countries that have developed the medical cannabis export framework

Identifying the next big cannabis markets in Europe
    Market size estimates and forecasts
    Legal frameworks and licensing structures
