Monday 3rd June: News headlines
- Here's a look at today's front pages of Irish and UK newspapers.
- Yesterday (Sunday) Ireland's Sunday Business Post reported that Google workers in Dublin are being told not to join a union by their managers: “They seem to be under the impression that they are not allowed to join the union, which may be a company’s position, but it is not a legal position. Nobody can stop them from joining the union, but they are quite nervous about it because they are on the outside ring as contractors. It is a very difficult situation” - SIPTU services divisional organiser Karan O’Loughlin. Read more here.
- European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has urged member states not to name short-term replacements for the Commissioners that have been elected as MEPs, insisting there is not enough work for 28 Commissioners anyway. Read more here.
- US President Donald Trump has arrived in London for a UK state visit, as hundreds of climate crisis experts have urged outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May to confront him over his approach to the issue during his visit.
- The Irish Times reports that Facebook lobbied to pay less tax in Ireland to offset millions of euro it would have to pay if other EU countries introduced new taxes on multinational corporations.
Dublin's fair city
The Samuel Beckett bridge, named after the great 20th century playwright, is pictured here spanning the River Liffey which runs through Dublin.
The bridge, located less than 3km from our Congress venue, was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It's the second bridge in the city designed by Calatrava, the first being the James Joyce Bridge further upstream.
It's a public holiday in Ireland, so you may find the pace of the city slightly more relaxed today. The Forbidden Fruit music festival continues today in Kilmainham with performances by Elbow, Spirtualized and Fontaines D.C. The Bloom horticultural festival is also taking place in Dublin's Phoenix Park.
We hope you enjoy whatever you're doing today and we look forward to welcoming you to Congress tomorrow.
