More than 9,000 people are now known to have been killed, and there are warnings the death toll could continue to surge, as rescuers continue their desperate search for survivors in southern Turkey and northern Syria after two huge earthquakes on Monday.

 

The Oireachtas Health Committee will be told today that at least ten assaults take place in hospitals every single day on nurses and midwives. INMO, Siptu and Fórsa representatives are due to speak to the Committee today where they will criticise multiple ‘failures of leadership’ by Department of Health and highlight the unsustainable levels of pressure across the service.


The Indo reports on the results of a new survey that states seven in 10 people would welcome a four-day working week.

Meanwhile, the number of parents using food banks more than doubled last year, according to Barnardos. A survey conducted on behalf of the children's charity, shows that by November 2022, one in ten parents had used food banks.

The Minister for Transport and Minister of State at the Department of Transport have pledged to "work closely" with State bodies to ensure the illegal use of drones is tackled effectively. It comes after the operator of Dublin Airport said investigations have verified there were drones in use close to the airport on Saturday afternoon and yesterday evening.

And Zoom, the video conferencing company, is joining its tech counterparts with the latest announcement of laying off 1,300 staff. The move affects about 15% of its workforce.

Monday (6th February) marked the birthday of the legendary Reggae singer Bob Marley. One of the pioneers of the genre, he survived a politically motivated assassination attempt during political unrest in Jamaica before taking refuge in London.
