Tourism Ireland has said its Global Greening project will go ahead this year despite the "extremely difficult circumstances faced by our industry".

Hundreds of landmarks and sites in over 50 countries are set to go green over the next couple of days to mark St Patrick's Day.

Tourism Ireland said it had considered not going ahead with its plans due to the Covid-19 crisis but that positive feedback from around the world ensured that their remained widespread support for the initiative.

Among the sites taking part this year are Madison Square Garden in New York, the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, Caerphilly Castle in South Wales and the Smurf Statue in Brussels.

Others taking part for the first time include: City Hall in Bangkok, Palais du Peuple in Djibouti City, the National Theatre in London and the Palace Bridge in St Petersburg.

They are joined by the London Eye, Burj al Arab, Niagara Falls, the 'Welcome’ sign in Las Vegas, the Chain Bridge in Budapest and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro among others.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said "despite unprecedented challenges" it is hoped that the Greening Project 2020 will "bring hope to people everywhere" that the current crisis will pass.

He said "We would like to extend our support and solidarity to everyone affected by Covid-19, especially workers in the hospitality sector."
