Motorists are being urged to drive with care in north Galway and across much of Co Mayo, after persistent snow showers have led to dangerous driving conditions.

The Ballinrobe to Claremorris road and the Claremorris to Kiltimagh roads have surface snow and care is advised on both routes.

Conditions are expected to deteriorate later tonight as temperatures fall below zero.

Some sleet showers are reported around Ballina and while snow has eased around Castlebar, falls from earlier this evening could lead to hazardous driving conditions as the night progresses.

Gardaí in Tuam say heavy showers this evening have eased and there are no reports of any difficulties, however they say care is needed on all roads, in light of the poor weather conditions.

Temperatures are hovering above freezing in Mayo at present but are forecast to dip as the night progresses.

Three flights were diverted to Dublin from Ireland West Airport this afternoon, after significant accumulations of snow on the runway.

Met Eireann issued a Status Yellow snow warning and ice warning for Connacht, Cavan and Donegal yesterday evening.

The warning was in place until 11am this morning.
