A phased lifting of the Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions during December is expected to be announced later in the week following a brief discussion at yesterday’s Cabinet meet-ing. The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will meet today to discuss the most recent Covid-19 data and make its recommendation to Government about easing the restrictions.

Willie Walsh has been appointed the next head of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a position that will involve the former British Airways chief executive leading the industry’s response to the pandemic. IATA represents about 290 airlines comprising 82% of global air traffic.

The distribution or publication of intimate images without consent and with intent to cause harm is due to carry a maximum penalty of an unlimited fine and/or seven years imprisonment under proposals approved by Cabinet yesterday.

Nine in ten meat processing companies do not offer sick pay to workers who are unwell, a new survey by the Migrant Rights Centre has found. The survey heard from meat plant workers, who were mostly foreign workers from 21 different countries working in 13 counties.

 

Elsewhere, President Donald Trump has come his closest yet to admitting election defeat after the government agency meant to ease Joe Biden’s transition into the White House said it is finally lifting its unprecedented block on assistance.

The President-elect, Joe Biden, also yesterday spoke about the importance of keeping the Irish border open following Brexit, saying he did not want to see “a guarded border”. He had also referenced the issue in a tweet during his campaigning, saying “Any trade deal between the US and UK must be contingent upon respect for the Agreement and preventing the return of a hard border.”
