Fórsa issued a statement last night to say that government has let health workers down after they scrapped the proposed childcare scheme, and should now refund the additional costs incurred by these workers. The INMO said they were not consulted on proposals for the now-cancelled scheme, and is seeking constructive engagement in the coming days.

 

The European Commission has ruled that airlines must give passengers refunds for cancelled flights and cannot force them to accept vouchers instead. However, Dr Tony Holohan still says that people should not book summer trips abroad this July despite this news and plans by airlines to resume some flight schedules.

 

Elsewhere in aviation, the Indo reports that Stobart Group chairman David Shearer has taken the 'unusual' step of intervening to appoint an interim chief financial officer to Dublin-based Stobart Air. It comes as the two companies vie to secure a financial partner for the Irish carrier, which currently operates the Aer Lingus Regional service.

 

The Minister for Transport confirmed that the government will provide additional funding to ensure public transport services continue, despite the drop in fare income. Minister Ross also said it is likely that people will be encouraged to wear face masks while using the service and elsewhere such as in supermarkets. 

 

In industrial news, Debenhams staff in Ireland are being balloted by Mandate this week for possible strike action. While a ballot for strike action at Bord na Mona will be averted if the employer agrees to refer its dispute to a joint industrial relations council, after they announced 230 staff are to be laid off. 

 

A Dáil motion, which sought to withdraw a report on garda misconduct allegations from the Oireachtas library will not be put to a vote today as the controversial report by senior counsel Sean Guerin would be removed without debate. The Guerin report led to the resignation of then minister for justice, Alan Shatter, in 2014.

 

And finally, today's zen is a classic by Mr Frank Sinatra who passed away 22 years ago today. Going to adopt his positive outlook this morning and hope that we're all back on top in June!
