A new governance code for charities, which includes a guide on a limit on the number of years a trustee can remain in place, is due to be launched today.
A panel was established by the Charities Regulator last year to put together proposals on the governance of charities.
It is the first time minimum standards have been set out for the sector.
These principles include behaving with integrity, leading people, exercising control and being accountable and transparent.
Charities are advised to consider introducing term limits for charity trustees, with a suggested maximum of nine years in total.
They will be expected to be compliant with the code from 2020.
The Head of Communications and Stakeholder Engagement with the Charities Regulator, Eamon Timmons, said the new code will give the public greater assurance and confidence in charities.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Timmons explained that the code was principle, rather than rule based.
