Speaking at the Siptu biennial delegate conference in Sligo yesterday morning (Wednesday), Kevin Callinan highlighted that “the protection of employment must remain as big a priority as confronting the cost of living.” Although the conference was covered by several newspapers such as the Times, RTE and the Independent, they failed to pick up on Kevin's point. Kevin also made an appearance at the School Completion Programme (SCP) syposium which marked 20 years of its existence. The event was attended by Minister for Education, Norma Foley, and Taoiseach, Micheal Martin. The symposium conveyed the message that much more must be done to "adequately meet the needs of the young people for whom the school completion service is an essential pathway to fulfilling their education and life potential." Euronews have given a detailed update on how countries across the EU are implementing the 4 day week. The 4 day week should enhance people's  health and happiness according to research conducted by ThinkTank. Trade Unions across Europe, including Fórsa,  have been pushing strongly in favour of implementing this as soon as possible.

 

 

Electric Ireland has become the latest energy supplier to announce a major price hike in the face of soaring oil and gas prices internationally. On average  electricity customer will pay an extra €300 a year while gas customers could be facing an extra €220. You can read more here.

 

Despite Russia's announcement that it will pull back forces from near Kyiv and Chernihiv, explosions were heard from the capitol on Wednesday morning. Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine are preparing for a new offense from Russian forces and pledged to fight for "every meter" of Ukranian territory.

 

Lastly a People Before Profit bill was rejected in the Dail yesterday calling for a referendum on Ireland's neutrality.
