The Irish National Teachers Organisation is to ballot its members on industrial action following their rejection of Government proposals on new entrant pay. INTO members rejected the proposals by 53% to 47%. Turnout was 55%. In a press release issued yesterday evening the INTO advised that it’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) will meet next week to carefully consider the result and a forthcoming ballot on industrial action.
The Irish Medical Organisation said a lack of emergency department resources, beds and recruitment will combine to create what it describes as a "perfect storm" in hospitals over the coming months. The IMO said it will result in "already stretched hospitals facing another chaotic winter." IMO President Dr Peadar Gilligan said it will lead to "over 1,000 people being left on trolleys and a severely hampered health service."
In a recent interview US president Donald Trump announced his plans to push an executive order to end the right of US citizenship to children born in the United States to non-citizens and immigrants in the country illegally. Seeking to end so-called birthright citizenship outlined in the 14th Amendment would take direct aim at the US constitution and likely prompt immediately legal challenges and potential opposition in Congress. Mr Trump said he has talked to his legal counsel and was advised he could enact the change on his own, contrary to the view of many constitutional experts.
The Teaching Council has removed a teacher from its register after a disciplinary committee found her guilty of professional misconduct over an incident during which Sellotape was placed across children's mouths.This was the country's first public teacher fitness to practise inquiry after new legal provisions were enacted.
