The Maestro

The New Ross Standard reports public criticism by local politicians over the delay in Carlow IT securing a site for a new campus in Wexford, has prompted college management to take public representatives and Wexford County Council to task in letters sent to the local authority and to all staff and students.

Congress has warned the Tánaiste and jobs minister Leo Varadkar that the recent High Court ruling striking down parts of the 2013 collective bargaining legislation may have “grave implications” for the pay, terms and conditions of construction workers in particular.

The Irish Times leads with a distressing story about the death of a Meath nursing home resident, while Carl O'Brien reports that teachers’ unions and school managers say a full reopening of schools will not be possible unless panels of substitute teachers are hired for schools.

Elsewhere, crowds gathering in parts of Dublin city centre to drink outside pubs at the weekend has led to uproar and social media and "condemnation" by the Irish Vintners Association. Orla Muldoon says this 'covidvigilantism' - our judgement of other people's behaviour in these strange times - is more than a little corrosive. The Vintners, meanwhile, are looking for the 9% VAT rate.

Professor Gerry Killeen at UCC has said Ireland can eliminate Covid-19 over the course of the summer but "repeatedly imposing, lifting and reimposing restrictions is a dangerous gamble."

A new report published by the London School of Economics says Dublin has outperformed even best-case scenarios for Covid-19 mortality among homeless and drug using populations. The full report is available here. The HSE National Drug Treatment welcomed the report: "Excellent, great team effort by all partners - great to see it documented. Shared experience, knowledge and a willingness to collaborate can really make a difference."

Finally, we tip the brim of our Zen sombrero to the maestro himself, Ennio Morricone, who has died aged 91. He leaves a wealth of iconic film scores that served to elevate all of the movies graced by his music. Some 400 scores in fact, from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly to Cinema Paradiso and The Mission. For a sample, click on De Niro above. Embedded below is the tune that inspired Peter Hook's bassline (actually Hooky says he just nicked it) in New Order's Blue Monday.
