“Ryanair strikes threaten to spoil holidays”

That’s it, Examiner, show who’s yer boss!!!

    1. Amorphous Kerry Blob

I know. The Indo front page as well:
Look at the ‘Misery’ the strikes are causing, for the poor people who can afford to take foreign holidays. Forget about workers rights.
      Great priorities altogether.

The football is fixed. Always has been. I’m getting very worried that its been fixed to let England win. Drive them barmy. They will push for a hard Brexit. Full of balls. They have no clue how much the rest of Europe wants to screw them. This is part of the plan.

      1. Cu Cullan

I do.. Russia gets more by not winning. Normally, in fairness, it’s set for the host to win, or come closer than anyone expected.

        1. Mé Féin

Winners who hosted the tournament since it started

          Year Winner Host
          1930 Uruguay Uruguay
          1934 Italy Italy
          1966 England England
          1974 W.Germany W.Germany
          1978 Argentina Argentina
          1998 France France

Same pattern shows for the Euros

          1. MaryLou's ArmaLite

In 40 years the hosts have won twice. And that France 98 team were rather hopeless, Vieira, Zidane, Petit, Lizarazu, Deschamps, Blanc, Thuram, Desailly, Pieres, Henry, Trezeguet, Barthez.

            Useless loosers.

          2. Cu Cullan

Look at that match again. The sight of Ronaldo running away from the French goal..! Totally fixed. Any bookie will tell you the same. Football is entertainment. The country that pays the most hosts. They can’t win. That will swing back in time and they will. They have to educate the developing countries in how it all works. Bread and circus.

Ah Leo-shifting opinions like a sand bar at high tide to suit the room he’s in. He never fails to disappoint that one.

    1. Sheik Yahbouti

Reminds me of that fine old song I heard sung by Groucho Marx – “How could you believe me when I said I love you, when you know I’ve been a liar all my life?”

      1. Adama

Yeh picking holes in the analogy makes all the difference. The argument is hereby nullified.

    2. Giggidygoo

Yep. That’s the way he operates. Has the SCUm unit been disbanded yet – wasn’t it meant to happen by/in July. What’s its replacement.

  4. Topsy

Congratulations to England. Well deserved win. Sweden are well organised, but England will win the QF & set up for a tough game v Croatia for a final spot v Brazil.

      1. PlumBobSmearPants

What’s so ridiculous about it? Do you know something the rest of us don’t?

        1. ReproBertie

I know loads more than you. I know, for example, that my comment, meant in jest, was a classic bait and switch.

          1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I genuinely think Belgium are in with a chance of beating Brazil. I like the cut of their jib.

          2. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

That’s what I was thinking. Belgium to win, though. You know. Give them a taste then whip it away.
Someone on here yesterday said it’s all fixed to let England win to promote Brexit.

          3. Brother Barnabas

it’s not the maddest idea ever… and has perhaps happened before:

June 2, 1992 – denmark rejected the referendum on the maastricht treaty. attributed to fear among danish that a small country like denmark wouldn’t be able to hold its own etc in such a close union of far bigger states

June 26, 1992 – denmark remarkably and unexpectedly wins Euro ’92 [even though hadn’t even qualified – were admitted 5 days before the tournament began due to yugoslavia’s elimination]. national euphoria etc. huge spike even in consumer confidence and general sense that, actually, denmark CAN hold its own against bigger nations (after beating france, netherlands, england and germany)

1993 – second referendum on maastricht ratified by 57%

fixing the world cup to facilitate brexit is unlikely, but not the craziest idea ever

          4. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I would genuinely enjoy pints with you, I think. Never gonna happen, obvs.
            *sad face*

          5. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

            Completely.
I retract my sincerity and resume the usual nonsense by shouting MINGEBAGS!

        1. Brother Barnabas

does all criticism or discussion of wrongs committed by CC constitute ‘ol RC bashing’?

      1. Jonner

I agree it’s not unique. I watched a documentary recently that focused on the prevalence of illegal adoption facilitated by the RCC in South America, hence my comment.

still worth watching short clip above.

    What a party !
Congrats to the boys for getting to the quarters – not too shabby at all considering how good the football has been at this world cup.
And a wonderful irony that the filthy Columbian cheats who tried to deliberately damage the penalty spot go out on a missed peno.
    Poetic justice.

    1. Brother Barnabas

disappointing lack of sportsmanship from both sides – henderson’s playacting was especially sad; even cited in post-match analysis by that inveterate cheat shearer, some credit to him for that. diving and whingeing all round, too. would prefer to see the englanders conceal the inner thug that’s part of the national character when on the world stage. hopefully southgate, who’s a decent if simple man, will sort that out for the weekend.

        1. Ollie Cromwell

He can’t help himself. He seeths with envy and hatred for the mainland.I reckon an English rose must have spurned his drunken advances while sweating in his GAA shirt at Coppers one night.

          1. Brother Barnabas

ah charger, i’m only tugging your mickey

            i don’t seethe with anything

and, eh, spurned? never happened, chum. not even once.

    2. scottser

england haven’t scored a goal from open play in over 210 minutes of football.
as the man said, they lack guile in the last third.

          1. Brother Barnabas

he always scores in clusters. after the 2 last time out, could see him getting another 2 or 3 over next couple of games

        1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I hope Cavani gets well enough to lash a few more goals in. I like him.

          1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I’d never heard of him. I had to google him to find out he’s actually quite well known. Ahem.
I’m fond of Uruguay having spent an afternoon there. Colonia. Lovely town.

          2. Topsy

Andy. If you’ve never heard about Cavani then you really haven’t a remote interest in football.

          3. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I really don’t. I love watching the World Cup and European Cup, though. I love the excitement for whole nations involved. I throw myself into watching it for a few weeks every four years then fuggedaboudit.

          4. Topsy

Fair enough. I watch lots of different sports at the Olympics, but never watch them again until the next Olympics. Eg; indoor track cycling. It’s brilliant.
