Not going to go away

Bin campaigners took to Leinster House yesterday to protest over the privatisation of bins in Dublin which has become the “wild west” of waste collection, according to a local councillor. A group of political parties and trade unions are calling for new legislation to allow Dublin City Council to take back control of waste collection services more than 10 years after private companies took over the market.

 

The outgoing president of the Irish Airline Pilots’ Association, Evan Cullen, has said a third terminal is needed as quickly as possible at Dublin Airport to facilitate a surge in passenger numbers at the gateway in coming years. Mr Cullen will be stepping down from the role on Monday after 20 years, and will be succeeded by Aer Lingus captain Mark Tighe, who held the role immediately prior to Mr Cullen’s appointment in 2003.

Elsewhere, Representative bodies for serving Defence Forces personnel have made a joint complaint under the European Social Charter against the Government for its failure to pay proper overtime to their members.


The results of the country’s first auction for the production of electricity from offshore wind projects are set to be revealed later today. As part of the Government’s climate targets, 70% of electricity needs to be generated from renewable sources by 2030.


A quarter of older renters expect to remain in the private rental sector for life as they felt no other accommodation options were available to them, a joint report from ALONE and threshold found.


And Tesco Ireland and Aldi have announced they will cut the price of their own brand bread from today. It comes as leaders from all the main supermarkets were invited to the Retail Forum over concerns to high food prices.
