To The AG that’s not releasing the full legal advice? That may be held in contempt?
There’s no backstop. There’s a fluffy ‘aspiration’ / ‘text’ in a discussion document. But as you told us a while back when I asked you what the backstop was, you couldn’t actually say what it was.
So show me where a backstop actually exists. ( Such a thing can’t exist until everything is agreed both in the EU/UK context but – in case you’re not keeping up with it – in the UKs own internal context. In other words, the back stop doesn’t exist)

Looks like it’s 50-50 the UK government will survive the day with demands for the full legal advice on Brexit to be published. The (Tory) speaker will join in with demands this morning. The advice is being fiercely guarded by Theresa May because it reveals Cabinet reservations.

      Euro:sterling is up 1% in 24 hours.

The Sasamachs tell us the border can be solved using technology. If this is true why are they worried about a Backstop which only exists until an acceptable solution is arrived at? Is it that the technological solution is unacceptable? Or is it that the technological solution doesn’t exist?

      1. ReproBertie

No. We’ve already had that dance and you just ignore the evidence. It’s much more enjoyable to mock your position.

        1. Giggidygoo

Exactly. We had that dance. And you came up with the evidence – a real gem – of ‘My understanding is….’
          Well, WoW!
But you didn’t come up and show where the backstop exists.
You came up with the existence of the word in a. D R A F T agreement,

So you’re the one that asks for the dance, but you don’t know the steps. The definition of Reprobate is quite fitting for you.

          1. ReproBertie

You asked me directly what my understanding of the backstop was. Of course my answer to that began with “my understanding is”. Now you try to present this as some sort of smoking gun? You’re even more deluded than I thought.

Ian Paisley called Bertie Ahern a reprobate and that’s where my user name comes from.

Here’s the BBC explaining the backstop for simpletons like yourself.
            https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-politics-44615404

You might see the part where they say both sides signed up to it. Despite what you seem to think, signing an agreement matters.

          2. GiggidyGoo

So – what you’re saying is that a draft agreement now is a legal agreement. Really? Maybe you should inform the majority of the HOC of this. Maybe preface it with ‘it’s my understanding ‘

As I’m at pains to point out to you – the agreement doesn’t exist except in draft form so a backstop therefore doesn’t exist. It’s not that difficult to understand really is it?

          3. ReproBertie

And as I have explained to you countless times, if the UK want to leave the EU with a deal that deal has to include the backstop as agreed in December 2017.

You can play semantics all you want but it won’t change the simple binary decision facing the UK.

If it doesn’t exist, as you alone claim, why are they trying so hard to either accommodate or get out of it?

          4. Giggidygoo

            That little word ‘if’
Small word. But says a lot. You agree then that a backstop doesn’t exist. Thank you.

          5. ReproBertie

No, that’s a question based on your premise, hence the if. Of course you’ve no answer because your premise is nonsense.

He was really setting himself up for a fall there: having a go at Leo for visiting a yacht club, while his Dad owned a yacht which he used to visit his private island from time to time…

The Haughey offspring are quite happy to live off Daddy’s ill gotten gains – including the money collected for Lenihan’s transplant. The rotten apples don’t fall far from the poisoned tree.

“SUFFER PAIN NOW SO WE CAN MAKE BRITAIN GREAT AGAIN”

    – the Daily Express seems to be revising its expectations for the success of the UK post-Brexit, I see.

Fair play to UCD whose report on elderly “frailty” makes the front page of the Telegraph today.

UCD research shows increased protein intake and weight-lifting and balance (proprioceptive) exercises ward off “frailty”. Hand-stands over 80? It’s the future.

    1. papa p

Thanks for highlighting that. I’ve been banging on about it for ages to the in-laws and missus :)

  4. Eoin

Also on the front page of the Telegraph is something of a novelty. The British have decided to unmask the man who made claims about a VIP paedo ring operating in Westminster, houses of parliament. Carl Beech’s claims sparked a €3m police investigation, but the claims were ultimately held to be groundless. Now that he’s being prosecuted for wasting police time, he’s been unmasked but that’s unusual in Britain.

There have been so many claims of a Westminster paedo ring over the years, it’s hard to believe there’s no smoke without fire.

      RTE reported this morning

https://www.rte.ie/radio1/morning-ireland/podcasts/ (7:30am business news, around 30 seconds in)

“The Irish owned telecommunications company Digicel has reached agreement with bondholders on swapping outstanding debt for new securities. The bonds had been due to mature in 2020 and 2022. The agreement will see them pushed out by two years. Some of the new bonds will attract higher interest rates. Negotiations with bondholders had been ongoing for some time.”

Yet, RTE’s later online report says nothing about agreement being reached, and as you say Johnny, the new offer closes in a fortnight’s time.

      1. Johnny

Thanks Eoin- there’s no agreement, just some more sugar from daddy:)

Arthur Beesley in terrific form today over at the FT-straight in for the kill

“Ireland’s richest man has been forced in the face of an investor backlash to sweeten the terms of a plan to postpone repaying $3bn in debt at his Caribbean telecoms company.”

“Digicel’s bondholders include Ashmore, BlackRock and Eaton Vance, but they have never publicly set out their view of Mr O’Brien’s refinancing plan. A committee of Digicel bondholders did not respond to a request for comment.”

        https://www.ft.com/content/e8b1ede8-f7b1-11e8-af46-2022a0b02a6c

Familiar with other two-Ashmore is a London based brit emerging markets fund.

  5. Johnny

The decline of a once half decent paper has accelerated, on a personal level I’ve always disliked it and its protestant/west brit holier than thou sermonizing.

This cutting and pasting from the FT on a topic off tremendous interest to Ireland is pathetic.

“Head of MI6 warns of Huawei security concerns”

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/technology/head-of-mi6-warns-of-huawei-security-concerns-1.3718917

Not one mention of Digicel’s critical infrastructure partner or Dennis O’Brien’s reliance in many of his cesspit markets,on its technology-despite numerous credible warnings that’s its a Chinese state owned/controlled outfit.

Dennis O’Brien is finished in the US and NY he’s frozen out off the capital markets, Digicel will be a case study one day in how to kill a cash-cow,this cowboy greedily stripping it off millions and millions in fees to related third parties, those outrageous dividends in a capx space irreparably damaged his reputation and severely weakened Digicel-probably fatally. Is Dennis reliant on the Chinese govt ?

So why is the IT’s piece best use in the latrine-from the FT’s perspective Dennis is small time.

Huawei is a key parter of Dennis and Digicel, its equipment had been banned in Australia and New Zealand, but Digicel has partnered up with it in many of its third word corrupt markets, much to the chagrin of the govt’s of Aussie and NZ.

From an Irish perspective what equipment is Dennis planning to use when he inevitably gets the broadband contract-Huawei ?

“Yesterday, in an interview with Reuters, Papua New Guinea’s minister for public enterprise and state investments, William Duma, revealed the PNG government’s intentions to stick with Huawei for the build of its national broadband network. This is despite a last-minute internet infrastructure package put together by Australia, the US and Japan, described by US Chargé d’Affaires James Caruso as a ‘counteroffer’.”

    https://www.aspistrategist.org.au/australia-and-huawei-in-png-more-than-too-little-too-late-diplomacy/

“SYDNEY, Australia — New Zealand has blocked Huawei from supplying technology for a next-generation mobile data network in the country, joining the United States and other developed countries that see the Chinese telecommunications equipment maker as a security threat.”

“The move follows a similar decision by Australia in August to bar Huawei from taking part in its 5G infrastructure rollout, as well as mounting warnings from the United States that the company’s ties to the Chinese government make its products vulnerable to snooping or interference — an accusation Huawei strongly denies.”

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/28/business/huawei-new-zealand-papua-new-guinea.html

“Reys commented; “Today is a proud day for Huawei. Working with Digicel, we have achieved incredible things and we are changing the lives of customers for the better. Using the most advanced technology we have shown that the Caribbean can lead the world in next generation entertainment. Digicel and Huawei continue to go from strength to strength and the future is very exciting for both of us and our customers.”

    https://www.digicelgroup.com/en/media/news/2017/august/23/digicel-and-huawei-technologies-put-the-true-power-of-fibre-to-t.html

“Digicel yesterday announced it will be swapping to the Huawei network in October.
The announcement was made by Digicel PNG chief executive officer Oliver Coughlan during the launch of Huawei’s latest edition to its P-series, the P10, in Port Moresby.
These plans are a result of the partnership the Irish mobile company has forged with one of China’s leading technology firms.”

New figures show that growth in Britain’s manufacturing sector is outpacing every other major European nation as the EU is gripped by a slowdown. Manufacturing growth is at a 26-month low in France, and a 31 month low even in powerhouse Germany. Also Italy languishes at a 47-month low…

IHS Markit has released its index of factory activity in November where a score of 50 is the cut off point between growth and decline. The UK has risen to 53.1, but the Eurozone as a whole has fallen to its lowest since August 2016, at 51.8.

All the while the ONS has revealed that the UK’s inward foreign direct investment (FDI) position increased to £1,336.5 billion last year, a record high.
