The Cabinet yesterday signed off on a temporary ban on evictions from next month until the end of March.

 

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe has announced that parents paying for their child’s accommodation while attending third-level education will be able to access the €500 rent tax credit.


The Central Bank will today set out new changes to mortgage lending rates. It is speculated that it will ease limits around mortgage lending rules. Since 2015, people seeking a mortgage can only borrow three-and-a-half times their yearly income.


A major delay in hiring firefighters is leading to serious safety concerns in Dublin. A total of 73 have been recruited this year, according to Dublin City Council, but Siptu officials say an agreement means two full classes of 45 – a total of 90 – should have been trained to address under-staffing issues.

 

Healthcare workers across the north are preparing to strike over a lack of a pay offer to help counter the cost-of-living crisis and the fact that "lives are being put at risk" over staffing levels. The GMB Union has begun balloting members over possible strike action ahead of Christmas, warning that workers are "desperate" as a result of living costs as well as "unsafe" staffing in the health service.

Elsewhere, concern is mounting over the wellbeing of sports climber Elnaz Rekabi after she competed at an event in South Korea without a hijab in what some saw as a gesture of solidarity with the women-led protests at home.


And finally, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued a safety statement after a social media photo from Leo Varadkar showcasing his meal prep for the week garnered confusion online. The image was published on the Tánaiste’s official Instagram yesterday morning and shows 16 tubs in a fridge containing a variety of pre-cooked meals, with people genuinely questioning what food was in the boxes.
