Meanwhile, Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) staff based in Killybegs are continuing their 48-hour work stoppage. The action by 110 inspectors and clerical staff at six sea fishery harbours follows a 24-hour stoppage last Wednesday.

 

Elsewhere, University Hospital Limerick (UHL) yesterday recorded the highest number of patients without beds in any Irish hospital since the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) began compiling trolley figures.There are currently 97 patients in UHL without a bed, according to the organisation’s TrolleyWatch figures. The INMO has since called on the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) to investigate the overcrowding, saying the figures are “extremely concerning.”

 

Continuing with medical news, the Journal reports this morning that there are currently no psychiatrists in private practice to assess, treat, and prescribe medicine for children with ADHD, amid a surge in demand last year for ADHD supports. It also says Children with ADHD could be waiting up to two years to be seen in the public system. 

 

A new discovery in the natural world reveals Monkey, gecko and succulent bamboo are among the 224 new species found in Greater Mekong area. A report from conservation charity WWF said the unusual finds in the region of Southeast Asia showed it was a “hotspot” for wildlife diversity but also highlighted the threats they faced and the need to protect species and habitats from being lost.

 

On to marine wildlife next, the Minister of State for Heritage said he is “deeply concerned” about the potential harmful impact caused by Russian military exercises planned around 240km off the Irish coast.

 

And the Taoiseach has described the escalating situation between Russia and Ukraine as “serious”, while confirming that Irish people are now advised to avoid non-essential travel to Ukraine.
