Over the weekend, Mary Lou McDonald was elected as the first new president of Sinn Féin this century at a special Ard Fheis in the RDS while Michelle O'Neill was elected as vice-president.

 

Director General of the WRC, Oonagh Buckley said there are cases of foreign nationals working in Ireland “in conditions close to slavery.” This follows a Supreme Court ruling that declared a ban on asylum seekers working in Ireland unconstitutional.

 

On Saturday, the Irish Independent revealed thousands of pensioners can hope for a significant increase in their income, as a massive underpayments scandal is being probed by Revenue.

 

Meanwhile, Leo Varadkar warned Theresa May “time is running out” to secure a soft-border Brexit deal after a leaked Government report found that a hard Brexit will wipe €18bn off the Irish economy and cost as many as 20,000 jobs.

 

The Irish Independent reports that air traffic controllers have been told by their trade union to work beyond agreed safety and fatigue limits because of staffing shortages in the control tower at Shannon Airport. Under the deal, staff will be allowed to work an extra 12 days of overtime each between now and the end of May on a voluntary basis.

 

Industrial union IG Metall, Europe’s largest trade union, has won German workers the right to a 28-hour week in a victory towards their fight for a better work-life balance.
