Both The Indo and The Times report that public servants are preparing for industrial action over Government’s failure to review the pay deal. Meanwhile, Government has denied claims it refused to engage in talks in this piece.

 

Looking beyond the public sector, The Times says there will be industrial relations trouble ahead if more employers don’t increase pay, and Labour finance spokesperson Ged Nash has weighed in, saying that both private and public sector workers need an immediate and significant pay rise to combat the cost of living crisis

 

Ireland's public acute hospitals may need up to 15,500 more staff within 13 years, according to a new ESRI report.

 

Also in health, The Times reports that State healthcare spending ran €366 million over budget in the first half of the year, despite the inability of the Health Service Executive to fill all of the roles that it has vacant.

 

The Government has published its Mid-Year Expenditure Report which sets out increased expenditure of 6% for 2022 and 6.5% for next year. The overall parameters for Budget 2023 provide for a total package of €6.7bn, with just over €1bn for tax measures and almost €5.7bn for expenditure measures over 2022 and 2023.

 

More than two-thirds of primary school parents and three-quarters of secondary parents worry about covering back-to-school costs this year, according to a survey from children’s charity Barnardos.
