In other news, US President Joe Biden will hold a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Belfast today before travelling to Co Louth as part of a historic four-day trip to the island of Ireland.

 

Bank of Ireland has apologised to around 35,000 mortgage customers after it emerged that it had made an error affecting their repayment record which may impact their credit history. The result of the mistake may be that those seeking to take out a new loan could experience difficulty getting approval while the issue is being rectified.

The Revenue Commissioners has told a PhD researcher that he is not entitled to a commonly-used tax exemption on his stipend of €18,500 a year and may face a tax bill as a result. The finding could have implications for many of the estimated 6,000 PhD researchers based in Irish universities.

The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation's (INTO) annual conference heard that urgent action was needed to tackle excessive workloads in schools if education authorities were serious about retaining teachers and principals. Earlier this year the union published a report on the workload challenges facing teachers and school leaders, which found that nine in 10 primary teachers were struggling with a workload that was “bursting at the seams”.

 

Meanwhile, Minister for Education Norma Foley has pledged to restore middle management posts in primary and secondary schools which were lost due to austerity-era spending cuts.

 

In more promising news however, there were big updates on the train front yesterday with the long-awaited return of the tea trolleys. Having been cut during the pandemic, onboard catering services are to be available on a “sporadic” basis on the Cork to Dublin line this week for the first time in three years.
