Friday's Fourth Estate

Fewer than 2,000 people currently have Covid-19 and transmission of the virus is still falling. Yesterday was the sixth in a row when fewer than 100 new confirmed cases were reported.

But officials are now concerned that lack of immunity in the community could invite a second wave, while the Independent reports that senior Gardai think new restrictions can't be enforced.

For my money, the Irish Times rather over-eggs Taoiseach Leo Varadkar's warning against State borrowing. His comments yesterday were certainly more nuanced that this headline suggests.

Meanwhile, the Examiner  tells us that the €350 Covid payment will stay until August.

Elsewhere, there's more on the ASTI impasse over Leaving Cert exams, and on Covid-19 income supports being denied women who return from maternity leave.

Also, it's windy out.

Finally, Sarah McInerney gets a glowing review for her stint as temporary (you reckon?) replacement for Sean O'Rourke on RTÉ radio's Today programme. Well worth a read if you aspire to go on.

Rome's Trevi Fountain was completed this day in 1762. Reason enough to Zen-out on that scene from Fellini's La Dolce Vita.

Ciao.

Bernard
