Peter Fitzpatrick is ready to quit Fine Gael and stand as an independent candidate, The Times has learnt.

It is understood that Mr Fitzpatrick, a Louth TD, plans to quit as early as next week, potentially plunging the minority government into a crisis over the budget. His support in the budget is not guaranteed, sources have indicated.

It is also understood that he has voiced concerns in private about feeling isolated in the party and about issues such as the government’s housing record. He is said to be frustrated with the party’s direction and because he cannot speak out on issues affecting his constituents, including housing.

It was expected that he would not put his name forward at a selection convention in Louth last night
