One year on

by Patricia Callinan & Niall Shanahan

Good morning,

This morning we take a moment to remember the crew of Rescue 116, marking a year since the tragic loss of the four crew members.

Captain Dara Fitzpatrick
Captain Mark Duffy
Winchman Ciarán Smith
Winch Operator Paul Ormsby

A memorial event took place last night in Aghleam area in County Mayo, where a monument is to be placed to commemorate the crew. The monument site was lit by four bright lights pointing skyward, with a four minute silence observed from 00:46.

This short video shows a video interpretation of the monument.

On Sunday, 77 members of Coast Guard’s Ballyglass unit completed the 347km “Miles in their Memory” cycle. The event marked the anniversary of the loss of the Rescue 116 air crew, and was also a tribute to Coast Guard Doolin volunteer Caitríona Lucas, and in memory of all those who have died at sea.
