Different Trains
by Niall Shanahan

Fórsa issued this statement on Friday in response to the spate of anti-immigration protests in recent weeks. Sparked by misinformation, and organised by a highly motivated clutch of far right activists, the protests seek to manipulate local opinion and fuel it on a mixture of hate and fear. Pretty noxious stuff, and Saturday's Irish Times had this analysis.

The Indo on Saturday looked at the four day week and quoted Fórsa in its coverage, while nothing is taken for granted as Richard Curran offered up this analysis of how industrial peace is working in Ireland, in contrast to the continuing turbulence next door.

Meanwhile, in the Department of Housing, one civil servant is looking for a pay rise, as the latest research shows that the gap between the wealthiest and poorest people is widening for the first time in 25 years.

I quite enjoyed this interview with accomplished academic and former Inchicore neighbour, Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin. I was especially taken with this piece of advice she wished to impart: “It’s really important to join a union… It’s just much better to be part of a collective rather than try and go it alone. It can be done, but it makes it more difficult. It’s important that people consider joining a union.”

Zen

Your Zen moment this morning is drawn from the idea that all human of history has been created by humanity's constant motion.  That first movement followed the decision of our ancestors to walk out of the East Africa Rift valley, a mere 60,000 years ago by some estimates. Most likely prompted by climate change. The movement is perpetual. Different trains, same species.
