Fórsa issued a statement yesterday saying that SNAs should be deployed to support the students they normally work with and told members not to undertake work outside special education roles which is covered today in the Irish Times.

 

Elsewhere in education, there's still uncertainty surrounding the junior and leaving cert as sources now say the exams may be held in late summer or autumn. Clarification is expected this week as students have been urged to continue with their studies.

 

As many businesses close their doors due to the pandemic, they are finding new and innovative ways to trade. RTÉ has covered stories of some people who are making the switch easier and our own Joe O'Connor is featured as co-founder of the The Doorstep Market which is a one-stop shop for small, independent Irish businesses, and consumers who want to support them by buying local products and services.

 

In some non-corona related news, US Senator Bernie Sanders has suspended his presidential campaign, making former vice president Joe Biden the presumptive nominee to face President Donald Trump in November's election.

 

Back home, Independent commercial radio stations can apply for up to €95,000 in special funds to help them raise “public awareness and understanding of Covid-19” in a €2.5 million scheme launched by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

 

Meanwhile, the actors’ union Equity says it has reached a pay deal for soap stars unable to work due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Irish Pharmacy Union are also calling for the medical card prescription levy to be suspended for the duration of the crisis.

 

I came across this article on Twitter about the low-paid workers keeping Ireland running during the pandemic thanks to our colleague Linda Kelly. While it's well worth a read, she pointed out that the poor union density in these sectors is a large part of what leads them to being low paid.
