Fórsa, has expressed its solidarity with trade unions in the UK as the Trades Union Congress (TUC) marks a national 'right to strike’ day, as reported on RTÉ. Half a million British workers are to strike in the largest co-ordinated action in a decade in increasingly bitter disputes over pay, jobs and conditions. Members of seven trade unions are taking industrial action, affecting schools, universities, trains and buses.

 

The nursing home fees scandal continues to dominate headlines this morning with coverage in The Times and Indo.

 

The Indo reports that ICTU has expressed “grave concern” over the recommendation to make those aged over 66 liable for pay-related social insurance.

 

Elsewhere, ICTU will today express its concerns over recommendations on tax breaks made by the Commission on Taxation and Welfare.

 

State bodies under the control of the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine have been asked to improve the representation of women on their boards. Read more on that here.

 

People living in the most deprived areas have a 28 per cent higher risk of dying from cancer compared to those living in the most affluent parts of the State, according to a new report.

 

And finally, PayPal has annoucned it will cut 2,000 staffers worldwide. The company employs more than 2,000 people in Ireland. If cuts were carried out proportionally, that would equate to more than 140 jobs.
