A series of correspondence between Nursing Homes Ireland and the Department of Health since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis has been published, that outlines early predictions of problems with PPE, hospital discharges and recruitment issues in the sector since the crisis began. The Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association (IALPA) is urging the Government to tailor any quarantine requirement to different regions and routes rather than applying a 'blanket' quarantine requiring all travellers into the country to quarantine for 14 days, saying a “more evidence-based approach” is needed to get the airline sector running again.


The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council has warned Ireland's debt could return to near-record levels due to COVID-19, saying it could reach 160% of gross national income - up from 99% in 2019. In its latest financial assessment, it also warns it could take up to three and a half years for the economy to return to pre-crisis levels.

 

Visits to nursing homes could return sooner than planned, as the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) says it is aware of the impact the visitation ban is having on resident's mental health. Outdoor visits while maintaining social distancing is one of the 'creative' options being considered.

 

More than 33,000 Leaving Cert students have now registered for the Calculated Grades system so far – only hours after the online portal to register opened.

 

Lastly, for a bit of good news in the midst of all this, the first same-sex weddings have taken place in Costa Rica, which yesterday became the first Central American country to equalise its marriage legislation. Alexandra Quiros and Dunia Araya pictured below were the first to tie the knot in a ceremony that took place just after the new law came into effect at midnight.
