The public has been urged to stand in solidarity with Cork library workers facing intimidation at work over LGBT+ reading material amid fears of a far-right counter protest in the city centre. Fórsa's solidarity protest in support of Cork library workers takes place at Grand Parade from 12.30pm today, before then marching to City Hall.

 

Over 40 retained firefighters in Waterford and Tipperary, who are members of the Unite trade union, are engaging in strike action today. The firefighters are seeking improved pay and conditions as well as structured and predictable "off-call" times. 

 

Timmy Dooley's questioning of RTÉ management at an Oireachtas committee this week led to controversy and speculation over the loan of a car to a staff member has today said he is “somewhat confused” that Marty Morrissey has been identified. Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, he said he was not referring to Morrissey and the broadcaster has been “pulled into” the RTÉ controversy “unfairly and unnecessarily.”

 

Executive Chairperson Jeremy Godfrey said Coimisiún na Meán remains "deeply concerned" over payments and governance controversy at RTÉ. Speaking on RTÉ's morning Ireland, Mr Godfrey said Coimisiún na Meán - which is Ireland's new commission for regulating broadcasters and online media - has a specific statutory role and RTÉ publishes a statement of performance commitments annually. 

 

Consumption of beer in the Republic remained below pre-pandemic levels in 2022 despite the production of lagers, stouts and ales more than doubling following the lifting of the final remaining public health restrictions in the early months of the year.
